How are they going to go from needing 6 out today to having none available on Monday?

Does the new timetable have a reduction in services?

Or do a Northern and reduce things to booked 2-car. At least some of Wales' 769s are now in service!

Along with the 769s and temporarily the 143s from store, the new timetable is said to be a lot more 'efficient' with no coupling, uncoupling and changing routes etc. Ive not seen diagrams but its said that the units that are out will be more intensivly used during the day. Will be interesting to see how that will affect unit reliability though

I was told only one more 769 was coming into service next week so assume that is not correct. I had thought the 769's would replace 142's like for like before the end of year.

It sort of suggests that services could have Northern style two car trains instead of four and dispensing with social distancing until there are enough 769's in service.

Perhaps someone knows the answer as I understood the 142's had dispensation to work until 31 December so I don't get the rush to get rid today.

There are the 15 143s plus some of the temporary 153s. If they cover the 769s directly on Penarth-Rhymney/Bargoed then there should be enough units to cover for 8 missing 769s including spares.

I doubt providing extra capacity for social distancing will be an issue after Christmas anyway - it seems inevitable that Wales will be back into another harsh lockdown with travel restricted in January, so trains will likely be running almost empty again during January.

Ive posted the full.diagrams in the tfw pacer thread in the allocations section but its automerged with yesterdays

There are 6 remaining 142s out today for their last booked day. The last workings will be (subject to any changes during the day) plus 075 which has swapped in during the afternoon

142002 20:46 Treherbert to Cardiff C
142069 20:46 Bargoed to Cardiff C
142074 21:22 Cardiff Bay to Rhymney
142075 19:31 Bridgend to Cardiff C
142076 21:00 Rhymney to Cardiff C
142077 22:01 Pontypridd to Cardiff C
142080 22:22 Barry Island to Cardiff C

The last workings for the others which have been used this week were:
142006 11/12 2E22 21:14 Rhymney to Cardiff
142073 11/12 2P71 20:15 Merthyr Tydfil to Cardiff
142081 06/12 2F14 08:57 Rhymney to Cardiff
142085 11/12 2G21 20:46 Treherbert to Cardiff
Any idea what 142 010, 072, 082, and 083 last workings were ?

Thanks for the replies it sort of makes sense. I thought there were around 14 142's in Wales so when I was told it would be one in for one out, I took that to mean there would have to be 14 769's in traffic before the last 142 went.

If there was a raft of short formed services reducing social distancing, I can envisage the first minister having a fit and putting Wales in lockdown next week rather than after Christmas.

I am intrigued as to what all the 153's do as they appear to be swamping Wales but they can't work certain valley lines.

The one thing I won't miss when the pacers have gone is the tortuous squealing and screeching on curves. You don't need an alarm to wake up in Queen Street Premier Inn for the racket they make heading to and from Central.

There are some 153s working on the Rhymney line and apart from that they are all over the Network. Regular working to Pembroke Dock, Chester to Crewe locals, Chester to Liverpool and also turn up at Birmingham International, Manchester Airport just to name a few

Thank you. No doubt they go to Manchester and may work Cardiff to Swansea.

Thanks for these! I take it that the 4 Pacers that are out tomorrow (mentioned later in the thread) will be 143s, seeing as today was the last day of 142s...? What about after tomorrow...? I heard that the 143s could get dispensation to run into next year, but for 4 units, that seems unlikely...?

Thanks I have done pairs of 153's Manchester to Crewe but can't envisage going all the way to Milford Haven.

I trust they have booked Cardiff to Swansea turns.

They have to otherwise they wouldn't be able to get to and from Pembroke Dock which I mentioned earlier.

142075 has had a set swap at Cardiff, immediately returning to Bridgend then forming 21:31 Bridgend to Rhymney so becoming the last 142 in passenger service. Ive amended the post with the final runs on.

That's 4 units for a Sunday service, isn't it? I'd imagine they'll need a few more for weekday/Saturday services.

Even with just 4 Pacer diagrams, 3 of them are 142s with 143624 the only 143 running.

Ive updated the allocations thread and.the post with the final workings once again!

Regarding the new timetable, what I think is ridiculous is how the Bay service now runs to and from Pontypridd as opposed to Caerphilly. Great for me, as I work in Cathays and it connects perfectly into the City Line at Queen Street (xx:07 from Cathays, City Line at xx:16 from Queen Street). Originally it was a pair of 150s, then they realise it was an absolute waste of capacity so they changed it to 143+153, but now it goes to Pontypridd (which I'm not sure if 153s are cleared for), it means that a 150 has to be on there at least.

I've been studying the timetable for the last 48 hours and I still can't work out what's happening. Trains are starting to get busier towards Christmas (143+150 was rammed leaving Cathays one day last week with students going home), yet I believe we'll see a fair few single 150s, which isn't going to go down well. I'm working all next week so I'll report my observations!

That's a horrifically long way in a Pacer!

Edit: Or even a 153.

The 155 trains ran Manchester ( Liverpool?) to Cardiff, until the door problem. I remember doing Crewe to Hereford some time before BR split them up into the single units. They are not as bad as a pacer on a long distance.

Cumbrian Coast up to Carlisle on a 142 then 5 min dash across to get another 142 to Newcastle. That was not pleasant. 4h + lurching round.

Valley Lines, That was kind of my point about trains being busier up to Christmas with shoppers etc and the 142's can work until year end so I am surprised they would be withdrawn now. With the amnesty to let people travel around 23-27 December I would have expected to ensure no short formations by keeping them going at least until then.

153s can't go past Radyr/Taffs well apart from that one that we up Treherbert by accident
