Well, at last it's happening. But unfortunately on a Friday and for one day only.

Diesel Gala

An extra enthusiast event and for the very first time on the Bluebell, a diesel gala will operate on Friday 21st March 2014.

The event will mark the final operation of the Diesel Mechanical Unit which is visiting the Bluebell from our friends on the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway in Wirksworth Derbyshire.

In addition, resident Class 33 number 33103 “Swordfish” and Class 09 number 09018 will also take turns in hauling passenger trains between Sheffield Park and East Grinstead.

The final locomotive to take part in the gala line up will be Class 08 number D13236 which will be giving brake van rides at Horsted Keynes.

A special programme and timetable will be available shortly with services operating between 10.00am and 5.00pm priced at £3.00.

Please note this is an extra special event and we regret that complimentary or other free travel vouchers will not be accepted on this day. To purchase tickets in advance telephone 01825 720800 or call into the Travel Centre at East Grinstead or Sales and Information Office at Sheffield Park.

DON’T FORGET: all Bluebell trains are heated by our heritage steam locomotives. So wrap up warm as the diesel locomotives are unable to provide heating on these services!!

Aside of still novelty ride behind diesels it doesn't really inspire me tbh.

I suspect quite a few people need D3236 for haulage.

And if enough of us attend this event, it might persuade them to finally change their entrenched views about not using non-steam traction on passenger trains.

Holding it on a Friday, no special rate tickets etc, they really dont want this to be a success do they!

I am day off on the Friday (subject to moving rosters) so will be there if possible, just to wind up the kettle brigade! ;)

More chance of me and half the posters on here having a love in!

They will do everything in their power to hijack this, they really dont want us diesel (and electric) lot loose on their precious steam railway.

I know what you are thinking and the answer is no. ;)

And to be fair to the Bluebell they are a bit different from other preserved railways, the vast majority of their collection is pre-grouping or pre-nationalisation design and up until recently diesel traction hasn't really fit in with what they were offering, which in my opinion was a genuine period experience and not simply a 10 mile trip in a clapped out MK1.

Go on, you know you want too!

and not simply a 10 mile trip in a clapped out MK1.

Funny, last time I was there that was exactly what I got, okay we had a rather fine 9F on the front though! ;)

I do actually rate the railway very highly but they need to realise that the diesel generation now have quite a bit of disposable income and to exclude themselves from dipping into that market (because they are a steam railway) is, in my opinion, rather short sighted.

I dont expect to see a blue/grey rake of mark 2s on the railway any time soon but a bit more tolerance wouldnt go amiss.

My earlier post was rather dismissive but I am willing to keep an open mind on this day, of course if they were serious it would have been held on a Saturday! ;)

I wont mention the LED colour light signal they have installed, how 'retro' is that!

I wouldn't worry too much, i think the penny has dropped finally to the management there is money to be made by employing diesel traction every now any again. It's the old guard who are the problem. ;)

Ah yes, those things. Now including the very Retro LED Feather signal too.

In all seriousness though I think there are some sings of changing attitudes on the line, with the first move really set in stone by the Carriage and Wagon department who purchased the Sentinel shunter from being fed up with the time taken for Sheffield Park to fire up a steam loco and then send it up to HK for any shunting to take place. Then the 73 arrived albeit for a short period, before going down to a 08. Cue the 08 not being completely up to the job required of it and along came the 33 with the intention of using it on the engineering jobs. That's led to the Locomotive department purchasing the 09 from HNRC and with the lack of run around space during the recent engineering works, along came the DMU - And surprisingly not a green one too!

Of course the other problem facing the line in the future will not just be us in the Diesel Generation and our disposable income, but also the age of us - Who wants to be up at 4 in the morning, make the journey to SP and have a long morning firing up a steam loco to get it ready for the first service of the day when... you can get up later and have a longer time to prepare the steamer for the day whilst running the first service of the day with a diesel, involving a earlier start to be achieved at the touch of a few buttons. And the Swanage manages to use DMUs into the evening.

In fact, the extension to East Grinstead has proved this point further with the first service being far popular than originally anticipated. And then there's been the recent 'shopper specials' as well.

So whilst it's disappointing that they happen to chose a Friday and not a Saturday - too many people come for the steam services at weekends apparently... even though only 1 person was disappointed and walked away when I was down there for the DMU (I was lucky enough to spend the day in the LNER car last summer during a loco groups AGM and only 2 of 50 odd people were disappointed about not having a kettle vice a day behind the 33!)... keeping an open mind is the thing to do. Gradually I think their attitudes will change completely - a mixed steam and diesel ethos works well for lines like the Swanage and West Somerset, so hopefully we'll see things change soon.

I'll certainly be there and keeping an open mind, and hopefully - whilst I appreciate the work gone into the present line they can't really claim that diesels don't quite belong there because they never ran on the line, nor did most of the steam!, They will start to include some of the history of the past 50 + Years since the end of steam. Now... about that VEP!

Oh, and who'd have thought we'd ever end up seeing this. It's becoming the BR Blue-bell railway!

Wait for the commuter ops to start on the new link. Life is like that, you doodle about weekends and the punters vote on weekdays. Dream come true?
