A TV celebrity's world record attempt to build the longest model railway was repeatedly thwarted yesterday by spoilsport thieves who stole parts of the track.
James May, of BBC Two's Top Gear, had helped unite 400 railway enthusiasts to build a toy track stretching the 10 miles from Barnstaple to Bideford, and run miniature trains along it.
But their efforts were dogged with difficulties when sections of track, and even the battery which powers the trains, were stolen. In another incident, coins were dropped on to the track, blowing the battery.
Yesterday, Rod Garner, secretary of the Tarka Valley Railway Group, branded the vandals' behaviour "appalling".
He said: "It's a community effort. Everyone is doing it for free, and to have some idiots come along and ruin it really annoys everyone involved. It's just sad that they have nothing better to do."
