Things to do in Mallaig

I have about four hours to kill in Mallaig next week. Any suggestions to help pass the time? Never been before so any suggestions welcome.

A few pubs, not a lot else unless you like looking at boats. There's a wee cafe/tea room beside the bank. Have a look if Calmac's Small Isles ferry times fit. A non-landing cruise is £15.50. Normally gets back into Mallaig for the afternoon Glasgow train. Otherwise there are ferries to Inverie on Knoydart and back.

After you've spent 10 mins browsing the co-op you can go over to Armadale on Skye it's about £9 return and if you don't get off it will take about 75 mins round trip.
On a clear day the view across to the mainland is stunning.

The Mallaig seagulls are legendary for swooping down on outside chip eaters so beware of airborne attack.

When I was there in april, I went on a lovely walk (after 10 minutes in mallaig, which isn't a great place).

I walked south towards morar station, which is very scenic and has a fantastic bay/beach. Was well worth the walk, peace and exploration.

It's £6.15 return, and I also found it a very enjoyable trip - I did a little walking on Skye before coming back.
However, it's the winter timetable next week, so the only option will be to go on the 16:00 and stay on board for the round trip.

Unfortunately the Summer timetable ends on Sunday, so the Mallaig-Armadale ferry will head back to the Clyde on Monday. The Small Isles ferry does a morning and afternoon return to Armadale before and after her Small Isles duties.

You're quite right I forgot the winter timetable starts next week.

Thanks all, shame about the winter timetable on the ferry. I will probably go for a walk as suggested above if the weather holds out. Any particular pub recommendations?

The Marine Hotel bar and the Steam Inn are the locals pubs. The Clachain is more upmarket. I would go for the Marine, but that's the kind of pub I enjoy when visiting places, meet the locals. The best place to get the real feel of a place is usually the locals pub.

If you are looking for ales, I don't think the Clachain or the Marine do them, not sure about the Steam Inn.

I've been to Mallaig twice:

1. Walked around the bay following the main road by turning right outside the station. Went opposite the station to have food in the cafe. Walked around the harbour. Waited on the platform.

2. Pulled up at the car park. Took a picture of the sign. Watched the last train of the day enter ready for a Glasgow run. Sped off to Tulloch to catch the Sleeper!
