5xx was for "DC, North of the Thames"- thus the 501s, which for the NLL and Watford DC (and yes, did sneak south of the Thames)

More precisely, 4xx was DC British Rail Southern Region and 5xx was DC all other Regions.

Although they nearly called the 455s 'Class 509s', with a REP-replacement to become '510s', IIRC. I think 455s were '4-PERs' for a while as well, presumably something to do with rehostatic brakes.

I hope that IEP will be 'Class 601', the first EDMU.
