Leaving Ebbsfleet heading towards Faversham yesterday, I heard a "discussion" between passenger and OBM about ticket validity. It wasn't me, so I don't know the details (and don't really care) but the main point seemed to be that the passenger had a ticket with origin/destination Ebbsfleet & the OBM was saying that this needed an upgrade to +HS.

This seemed a very strange concept to me; but knowing that railway ticketing can have relatively little in common with logic, I'm curious: could/does such a ticket exist?

If the held the SVR, the ANY PERMITTED is actually cheaper than the NOT VALID ON HS1.

Hmmm. That makes "NOT VALID ON HS1" valid on HS1

Ebbsfleet to Gravesend and onwards to Faversham is not on HS1 so the not HS1 ticket would require travelling via Gravesend (maybe the not HS1 ticket to Ebbsfleet should be route Gravesend?)
Likewise, a not-HS1 ticket from Margate/Folestone etc is valid on the HS services as far as Ashford but not valid for running on HS1 itself from Ashford to London.

Last time I asked an OBM about this he said that Ebbsfleet was definitely only on HS1. The anomalies occur because of clustering, of course, but I was assured it wasn't possible to sell a NOT HS1 ticket to Ebbsfleet.

If that is the case, how comes all OBMs say "if you wish to travel further than gravesend, you require that is valid on HS1/NOT marked "not
HS1"

Genuine question

Southeastern's website sells tickets which it states are "not via ferry." Southeastern say you must travel on the ferry when using these tickets, so I wouldn't take everything they say as being sensible or accurate.

And in English?

LOL that will teach me for changing what I was saying half way through typing a post.

What it is meant to say is "if you wish to travel further than gravesend, please ensure your ticket is valid for HS1/and does not have "Not Valid on HS1" printed on it.

Got there in the end.

Just had a look and Trainline are still using the "TILBY EXCL FERRY" description, whereas BRFares gives "TILBRY&GRAVESND". And NRES won't give a route via Tilbury at all...

See here for some commentary from Southeastern about the old TILBY EXCL FERRY tickets.

There are quite a few of them from stations on the Southern MML such as the one you've identified, plus from stations on the Anglia lines like Shenfield and Stansted.

I wonder if tickets like Ely to Ebbsfleet routed +Via Cambridge are regarded by Southeastern to be valid on HS1 services? Southeastern's publicity suggests only +Any Permitted and Plus High Speed routed tickets are valid on HS1.

There are loads of tickets with route descriptions not included on Southeastern's list of approved tickets that passengers can buy to Ebbsfleet. These routes include +Not Valid On HS1, London Not Und and Warmster-Salsbry.

Stratford International isn't much better. Although it is very much a HS1 station, it also has plenty of Not Valid On HS1 tickets available to it. Via West Hampstd, London Not Und, +Direct, +Not Underground and +Via London to name but a few.

By that web page, all those other routings should be fine, and they even already covered that St. Albans ticket here:

The following ticket descriptions entitle you to travel on high speed services:
...
  • Tickets that are not valid on the high speed route specifically state ‘Not Valid on HS1’
...

So according to this web page tickets that are not valid on the high speed route specifically state 'Not Valid on HS1' and are included in the list as entitling you to travel on high speed services

Shame they have only partially quoted NRCoC 13 and missed the part that says "You may travel between the stations shown on the ticket you hold in..trains which take the shortest route which can be used by scheduled passenger services; or trains which take the routes shown in the National Routeing Guide."

They also missed the bit where it said that any restriction to permitted routes must be shown on the ticket.

I also note they've got a rather odd dangling clause:

Tickets that are not valid on the high speed route specifically state ‘Not Valid on HS1’, unless a supplement has been purchased.

This implies that if you purchase a supplement, the original ticket will stop specifically stating 'Not Valid on HS1' ;)
