BRFares indicates that tickets to 'ST ANDREWS BUS' are available from a large range of stations across the UK, including Leeds. Is this the St Andrews in Scotland that you get the bus from Leuchars to?

This is the St Andrews I'm looking to travel to, but the routes all have a maltese cross on them! Furthermore no booking sites appear to identify that NLC. Any thoughts? Or should I just book to Leuchars and have done with it? Cheers

EDIT: I have just remembered these things don't always permit railcard discounts, so it will most probably be a waste of time. Still it is strange that you can't get them online?

I presume that if it was any other "St Andrews", then the fare to it from Leuchars would be higher

Scotrail combined tickets are a bit strange that way. I recently was enquiring about EDB APT BUS/TRAM tickets - which are available to buy at stations and at the airport itself, but not online.

Try looking for the code 'SAO' which does show up on the Scotrail website.

D'oh - good idea. The ScotRail site recognises the NLC and will offer timetables to St Andrews showing the connecting bus correctly.

Sadly it shows up 'No Fares Found' for all combinations I can find :/

It does give me fares to Dundee so it must be valid. It seems to be £2.80 more than the fare to Leuchars, and you can get a St. Andrews day ticket for £3.40 so for a return journey it doesn't really save you much anyway.

What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
To answer the OP first question, the only other St Andrews in the UK that I am aware of is the football stadium in Birmingham, which is the home of the dirty bluenoses who have never played in the final of the European Cup :D

The above statement should give a clue as to what team I support :)

In peace

najaB, you don't happen to have any more information about the day ticket do you? As ever, visiting from a long way away and finding out how to use local buses is basically impossible. I wish there were a Plusbus!

If you can not get a through booking to St. Andrews Bus [SAO] from your local station you can just book to Leuchars and get the add on separately. As NajaB states it is £2.80 single or £5.05 return (day or period). I sell them on board the train.

Can you spot the discrepancy in the links above?

I'm interested in the day ticket for the bus though - seems cheap for St. Andrews:-

St Andrews dayrider £3.40
travel within the St Andrews town boundaries.

Does that include Leuchars Jn.?

No.

All the Fife town dayriders are £3.40, except Kirkcaldy and Leven at £3.00, but they only really include the town itself and the very nearby villages (e.g. Glenrothes includes Leslie, but not Thornton). The weekly St Andrews Megarider+ includes Leuchars, but there is no equivalent Dayrider+. The Fife Dayrider is £8.30, Fife Dayrider+ is £11.30 (includes Dundee and Edinburgh).

Indeed, I think it probably doesn't sadly :( Is the £5.05 ticket the same price as the one you'd buy on the bus? I've booked tickets to Leuchars now for the trip so I'll look at getting a bus return as suggested by reb, or maybe I can get it from his colleague onboard on the day. Thanks :D

Yes, the £5.05 ticket is available on the bus.

I'm looking at going from Leeds to St Andrews in a few weeks' time, and this was confusing me too! I was looking up fares to SAO with the YNG discount applied, and no fares were turning up. Now I see where I've gone wrong. In my case, the SVR to Leuchars should be better value.

Sometimes splitting Offpeak Returns at Berwick-upon-Tweed can give a saving, although only (of course) if you will be using trains that stop there. BUT this split on its own doesn't help with Leeds-Leuchars: apologies.

The Fife Dayrider+ is exceptionally good value - it's £3 to £4 cheaper than a day return ticket from Dundee to Edinburgh but it's valid on the same bus!

I often see drivers selling the East Scotland dayrider ticket as its 10p cheaper than the day return to Glasgow from most of Fife.

Did my journey yesterday, was very convenient getting my ticket at Leeds before I started the journey. Also pleasing to note that there's a national rail ticket office at St Andrews Bus Station! Shame it costs £5 for such a short journey, only 5 miles long. 50p a mile! Ah well, no way I was walking for 90 minutes each way!
