Not just at the stern. Britannic was designed with four sets of giant gantry davits on each side of the ship. However, such was the rush to complete her for service as a hosptal ship not all the gantry davits were actually fitted. The davits that should have been installed on the shade deck at the very stern of the ship were not installed, neither were the port side davits next to the forward funnel. To correct the shortfall the ship was temporarily fitted with rows of conventional Welin davits along the length of the boat deck and on the shade deck.
In terms of open portholes it is highly unlikely that they played any significant part in the sinking of the Titanic, but they are generally agreed to have been a significant factor in the sinking of Britannic.
