A question if I may.

For this route, one would obviously usually take a FGW train into Paddington or an XC train to Bristol and FGW to Paddington.

But is taking a train to Exeter and then SWT to Waterloo one of the 'Any Permitted' routes that a ticket would allow? I'm fully aware that it would take much longer, and that some would say that a FGW HST is more comfortable than an SWT 159, I'm just curious to know if this is a permitted route and one to take at some point (I've never actually travelled on the SWT route from Exeter to Waterloo...).

Yes you are permitted to travel via Exeter St Davids into London Waterloo on an Any Permitted ticket between Tiverton Parkway and London Terminals.

I'm not sure what route the SWT takes but since Exeter Group passes the fare check it would appear to be valid on map LE

Okay thanks for that :)

That'll give me something to do over the summer :p

I did consider coming back from London that way on one occasion last year, but didn't on two counts, one being the uncertainty over the ticket validity, and there was also rail replacement buses around Basingstoke (IIRC)!

(Having said that, it could well be cheaper to single Tivvy-Exeter and Megatrain Exeter-London...)

I wouldn't say that the FGW HST seats are more comfortable than those on the SWT 159s. The only thing I don't like about the 159s is that sometimes they can feel a little claustrophobic due to the shape of the body shell. I find the seats on the 159s far more comfortable than those high-back seats on the refurbished HSTs.
