Neither, it is an object and I hate the way locos and whatnot are usually referred to as 'she' it's really irritating. Supposedly so if its being tempermental etc it can be used as such.
So, yeah, 'it' IMO. I refuse to use 'he' and 'she' in reference to locos or anything like that.

Hello folks

I'm putting some pics of the Tornado on my site (shhhh don't tell Demps I can't take any more of his extremely in-depth photography opinions... lol) now then as I'm a train noob should I refer to The Tornado as he or she?

I don't generally assign trains any kind of gender-ism (Normally referring to it) unless it's named with a proper noun where I use the appropriate gender for the name, or it's a heritage vehicle with no "proper" name, where I use the feminine address in the manner commonly associated with ships.

In the context of the above discussion though, consider the following two HST power cars that have been named in tribute to drivers sadly lost in the Ladbroke Grove and Ufton Nervet disasters:
  • 43 033 - Driver Brian Cooper, and
  • 43 139 - Driver Stan Martin
Given that these vehicles are named in memoriam to persons of the male gender, surely referring to either power car as a "she" would actually be highly inappropriate? :?:

apart from 158820 (Damien)...
Oh aye, 158 820 is most definitely a "he", although "Daemon" is also a more than acceptable address for that truly unfettered beast! <D
(Actually, I'm off to Cymru this weekend - Must remember to keep an eye out for 'im and get a much needed "tick" if I can! <D)

For me its an 'it', except for our engines at ALR, with names like Loweco, Atlas, Odin, Vulcan, Druid and George, they are all definately blokes. Plus it'd be very rude to call a woman what I call our engines sometimes when they mess me about.

Oh yeah, the question was about Tornado - yes, 'It'. I hate it when news readers put a 'the' on its name and call it 'The Tornado'. No, read the nameplate.
