So I know that it's probably too early to tell, but I'll ask anyway, does anyone know if 1U47 definitely won't be a 68 on Thursday 9th (e.g the driver no longer signs them?) Thinking of doing Leeds to Scarborough for a last bash and there's no point of it's going to be a 185. Thanks in advance.

From my records it looks like 1U47 has run nearly every day in the last couple of weeks as Mk5s. It is one of two diagrams that start from Manchester and seems to be the favoured one of the two. It starts at Longsight doing :-
5U23 to Manchester Piccadilly
1U23 to Scarborough
1U36 to Manchester Piccadilly
1U47 to Scarborough
1U60 to Manchester Piccadilly
1U71 to scarborough
5U71 to Scarborough Depot.
There is a lot of risk because it relies heavily on crew who sign 68s+Mk5s across the Pennines so a 185 might take over.
You will find the Scarborough-York stretch less likely to have crew problems so a diagram spending more of the day there is less likely to end up 185 on the day.
Also the sets do sometimes get swapped mid diagram with another set - that wont bother you.

That's what I thought already. I have next week as well to go to York and wait for one if things go wrong on Thursday.

Is this correct that 68029 is with TP04 today? RTT has 024 with TP04. I’m planning my photo opportunities for the day.

Thanks for researching and posting. I notice the sets are swapping diagrams during the day quite a bit. I also notice all five diagrams are in use !.

Plenty of opportunities for a last bash of them before the cold hand of the Winter time table comes down.

Thanks for your info.

I notice LO603 has again swapped sets midday !. I think, from memory, it is not totally unusual !. I wonder if there is a common factor that makes this predictable ?.

A 68 left Manchester last night at 17:30 so there was at least one out over the Pennines yesterday.

Yesterdays workings were posted above in post 2105. As you can see there were multiple cross-pennine trains.

You and I both know TPE, and especially the 68s, are to be taken with a massive pinch of Saxo.

I have in the past been checking RTT at the end of the day or the next day. There can be variance but generally what is planned in the morning to run day-by-day does actually run. That has been three or four sets out every weekday that have ACTUALLY run. Very recently looks like all five potential diagrams have been covered by 68s+Mk5s but I have not been checking this week too thoroughly. Remarkably healthy given the headwind against them and the shortage of qualified crew East of Leeds.

The diagrams yesterday were placed there by a highly reliable poster.

To confirm, all five Class 68/Mk5A diagrams ran yesterday, with all of the booked passenger workings covered.

The one you saw at Piccadilly was 68023/TP09.

Hope that helps:)

Indeed from my checking of what is actually running it seems the information is fairly reliable. Things do change during the day but not so that less runs, more likely some swaps amongst what is out on the day. Just recently Longsight seem to be putting more out. So good that it is hard to believe the 68s+Mk5s are supposed to be retired in December.

The timings between the retreat into the depot and it re-emerging suggest fuelling?

There could be changes as the Up Huddersfield line is currently blocked in the Dewsbury area due to an earth slip so anything towards Manchester has to run via Wakefield Kirkgate ex Leeds subject to train crew knowledge.

1U36 08:45 SCA-MAN got as far as Signal L3625 just past Leeds West Jn before returning to Leeds station Platform 15 then left again running via Wakefield Kirkgate eventually arriving into MAN at 12:06hrs 64 minutes late, the return 1U47 11:35 MAN-SCA departed MAN at 12:18 43 minutes late.

Update 13:30 - 1U47 terminating at York then ECS 5U47 to SCA

Update 14:40 - 1U60 14:48 SCA-MAN cancelled throughout

Thanks. It was LOUD. I was in a double-glazed Virgin train and I could hear the thing even above the hubble and bubble of fellow passengers, several platforms away.

The reason for the swaps today is so that 68021 ends up on the depot tonight has it requires fuel, it couldn't get on the depot earlier has it would have blocked 68025/TP02 from being able to exit.

Thanks for that, I saw TP02 was ECS back to Longsight. Must not forget that Scarborough is a one (long) road deport just for light servicing.

68021/TP10 now working LO604.

After 22:20hrs this evening the route through Dewsbury is blocked until tomorrow morning due to a landslip, the Down line towards Leeds will be open tomorrow however the Up line towards Huddersfield is expected to remain shut until Monday morning, obviously things can change at anytime.

TPE services towards Manchester will be diverting via Wakefield Kirkgate so it remains to be seen if any 68’s will be out across the Pennines, plenty of delays today so it’s very likely the same for the next few days.

edit 19:25hrs - 68's are only planned to be in use SCA-YRK-SCA tomorrow.
Typical. When I'm booked on 1U47 tomorrow. Oh well. It can't be helped. The main thing is that the trains keep running.

Looks like all services from Scarborough are only running to York tomorrow, apart from a few to Leeds.

With regard to this landslip near Dewsbury, is there a thread discussing this issue, even as part of other weather-related disruption? Had a quick search but couldn't find anything.

Where exactly is the location of the slip? I did notice a MK5a set crossing Batley viaduct westbound on Tuesday evening around 5pm. I didn't get a good look as I was driving, but it was moving at a very slow speed. Would this have been related to the landslip?
