The stress is certainly there, and probably far more than you can ever imagine. It's caused by the earnest desire to do the job to the very best of their ability, knowing that many hundreds/thousands of other staff are largely dependent on them. You don't usually get to such a senior role in a large organisation without having exhibited significant skills over a lengthy period of time.
I get what you are saying but I still don't understand the connection between messing up big time and getting a massive pay off. "It is a stressfull job and you failed and now the company is loosing money, here is X million pounds. Try to survive while the rest of the staff are getting laid off for naff all".

I can tell the answer to 1) by your answers to 2) and 3).
Ha ha, you saw right though me. But as I said paying people huge amounts for failing when the staff loosing their jobs as a result of your failures get naff all does seem somewhat obscene. Lower down the slippery slope there are people being let go with no pay off if they don't perform and they are loosing any house they had, not just one for millions of pounds they cant afford any more in exchange for one worth less millions.

From a very slightly different angle do you believe the threat of loosing a bit of what you had is as stressfull as loosing everything you have? Also do you believe that the people at the very top really understand the existence of the people at the very bottom? I have friends who when they tell me they are skint they mean they only have £500 for a week (Plus savings), when I tell them I am skint I mean I am skint, I have nothing.
