In the interest of settling a disagreement, do train drivers have a driving licence, like a car driving licence, that they are able to get penalty points on for speeding etc?

I wouldn't liken it to a DVLA license, but yes they do have one (of sorts) and yes they can get points, but it is more of an advisory thing, I expect most poor drivers would be taken off the job before any license issues arise.

You dont have a little bit of plastic you have to produce if a policeman wants to see it. You do have a permanent record which follows you around for your career.

Scotrail drivers do indeed have a little plastic card with your picture on it and certified traction on the back ,just like a car licence. You are expected to carry it art all times.

Same with GA you have a train driving license card with your photo, your pts certification and your driver number on it.

Southern is the same, guards and drivers are issued with plastic card licenses (think all safety critical staff are actually) mugshot, job title, PTS, traction etc

No, you don't, but you do need to be able to get to your home depot within a set time frame at most hours of the day.

Semi-related question... do you need a car driving licence to be a train driver?

Not for the practical side of the job, however the prospect of shift work at strange times of the day means access to a car/bike is important.

I have a train operating licence, it contains my name and picture and details of what stock I am certified to work (444, 450, 158, 159) and it also doubles as a PTS card and says I am certified to work on DC lines-but not AC lines.
