I once got an FGW Cardiff-Portsmouth service made up of two of their 'three-car' 158 units (which are actually 1.5 two-car 158s). Quite an unusual sight to behold. Six vehicles, all with cabs and very little consistency!

Have 3x455 combinations ever run in service before or just as ECS movements?

I'm sure I've travelled on a 12-car 455 set on the Strawberry Hill loop once.

wow!
I have been on 3x156 on the west highland line splitting thrice on route.
has there ever been am 8 car 156?

Ive also experienced 3x156 on the West Highland with the lunch time departure from Queen Street, but not sure how it would split 3 times. 1st at Crianlarich where the Oban set comes, then at Fort William where only the back set goes to Mallaig.

Had 4x150/1 on a late saturday night out of Euston to Watford Junction.

Great Western sometimes do multi-set moves with an late evening penzance-exeter all stations, once had this formation 150+153+150+153.

Pretty sure the routes the 455s run are all limited to 8 carriages by platform lengths.

3x156 is normal on the West Highland, I believe they all run like that during the summer, with a single unit going to Oban and the other two going to Mallaig.

Yeah that's what I thought as the Woking side is planning on being extended next isn't it?

During the snow we had a few winters ago, an 8-car formation consisting of a 142+143+142+150 went through Cardiff Central (pl. 7), as one of them failed.

Also, 2P93 1940 Caerphilly to Penarth on Friday 31st August was worked by 142082, 143609 and 143625, from Cardiff only (082 and 609 having terminated with 2F82 1851 from Aberdare, then 625 on the original 2P93).

There are also a few peak hour services to /from Glasgow Central booked for 3 x class 156.
