What, if anything, can be seen from the cab at night using headlights on a 165? They don't look very bright. Does the beam point at the track or just forward at nothing?

They should point toward the cess to illuminate speed boards.

They are more for lineside staff than the driver. We need to know where we are regardless of external illumination

newer trains are a lot better with the HID headlights, but older stock is like having a candle on the front of the train

They are fairly dim on the Chiltern 165s because upon refurbishment cosmetic covers were placed over the headlight recesses. As these have aged, the Perspex in many of them has become more opaque.

There isn't actually much need for train headlights to illuminate the line ahead. As others have said they are there for the benefit of track workers and to illuminate retro-reflective lineside signs.

The head / marker lights on 456s are dreadful. As someone said recently at my depot, they are there to show people that there is a train there, not to actually light anything up!

Enjoy 455driver. ;)

Not a problem, if you need to see where you are going (within reason) then your route knowledge is not up to scratch! ;)

You do realise that the bulbs fitted to the 456s (and 142s) are a special order dont you!

Nobody keeps 2 watt bulbs in stock anymore!

The new LED lights being fitted to G A class 90 s are great I was train spotting at Marks Tey the other day and I could see the light of an up express about 2 miles away
