I am coming from outside of the rail industry... I have been a police officer for the last 17 years. I have obviously read the job description but what does the role of a guard on a day to day basis... Is the much conflict, what are the hours of work, is it a journey to London and back?

Nah. Our passengers are generally pretty lovely. Most of the places where the trains stop are in affluent areas with low crime rates, most of the passengers are commuters in the peaks and students and families in the day time. There are a lot of football fans at weekends but they are rarely any trouble. The trains full of drinkers on Friday and Saturday nights aren't too bad either.
