Hello everyone, first post so please be gentle!

I recently applied for the position of Trainee Conductor with ATW using the whole comeabroad website. I got a notification that I hadn't made the the shortlist. Such is life...

Anyway on Friday i had a phonecall from Arriva that they would like to invite me in for an assessment day on the 1st March which struck me as odd, is this something that happens or is it an admin error at their end?

Cheers for any info you can give in this!

***********Edited for being a bit special**************

Just noticed I was looking at an old application......

So huzzah an assessment day! What can I expect at one of these?

Cheers!

Hi Forest rail
i did my assessment in Jan and i passed. Go through the practice material that they will send. You will have to work out ticket prices, check correct tickets are being used and do dot test or SCAAT test. Most people will tell you the dot test is used more often than the SCAAT, this i don't know. I do know that i practised like mad on dots and on the day it was a SCAAT. You will also have to read paragraphs. and these could be daft things about shop opening times, but it can get quite confusing and at the end you will have to answer multiple choice questions. I have links for both dot and SCAAT tests, inbox me and i will send the link. Oh yes, you are timed on each part.

Well done Forestrail for getting through the sift. What depot did you apply for? I think lots applied so is interesting to here that they are starting to move onto the next stage.

The post I went for was marked as Cardiff and Valley lines so im assuming its the Canton depot.

Unfortunately, Maps has stopped.
I applied to ATW some years ago, and we were given the choice of doing the Valley lines, or going over the bridge and doing the Pompeys and the Manchesters and longer distance trips. Apparently you do one or the other. Both were based at Canton, though, if I remember correctly. The assessments are the same whoever the TOC is in my experience. Apart from what TDK said, I'll tell you what I tell everyone.

Go in a suit, first impressions DO count.

LISTEN to what you are told, instead of trying to do things before you are told.

If in doubt, ask. Better to hold up the proceeding for thirty seconds while they explain something, than to cock it up because you didn't understand.

You WILL NOT complete the Group Bourdon test, so don't rush to try and finish. Quality, not quantity is the key here. You are expected to complete a certain amount, and what you complete must have a certain amount of accuracy.

Above all, most importantly, don't panic!! In the last assessment I passed in October, I didn't complete the ticket selling test, yet obviously I still did enough.

Good luck.

Check out the sticky from Mojo at the top of first page in the jobs and careers section regarding access to the group bourdon software. The SCAAT test is also on the practice software.
