Apologies if this sounds a stupid question but here I go

I start my Conductor training course soon and I haven't recieved my new uniform yet, so I was wondering what I should wear, I was thinking of shirt, tie and smart trousers?

You cant go wrong with that. Sets a good first impression. From what I read, you get your uniform after the first week so its best to be as smart as possible while you're in 'civvies'

Spot on, Shirt, Tie and trousers as this is what your uniform will be when you get it.

Shirt, tie, smart trousers, smart shoes and plenty of Brut! You can't go wrong. People totally underestimate how their first impressions last. I have in the past, sat on interview panels for prospective candidates for positions in my current employment and have had guys turning up wearing trackie bottoms and trainers. You can't discriminate because of what someone wears but the bosses certainly can find other problems with employing them (and they do). Appearance is key!

Just started my driver training and it's suit or shirt and tie until you get your uniform.

Good luck with the training.

Go casual and you may blow that first impression. Go smart (shirt, tie, shoes), even if not required, wont look bad.

Of course you can. If I was interviewing someone for a job where they were expected to be of smart appearance - they are after all the public face of the company - and that person rolled up for an interview in jeans, trainers and a tee-shirt - or indeed were considerably short for their weight - then that tells me that they don't really care or haven't a clue what smartness looks like. I wouldn't want that person representing my company.
As you state in your closing line, "Appearance is key".
