The question is why the track quality of a tramway is superior to that of the Island Line?

Surely the speeds and axle weights would be comparable.

Surely the speeds and axle weights would be comparable.

Relatively limited suspension would seem the obvious answer, perhaps hindered by the size and profile of the wheelsets - they just can't absorb track irregularities to the same extent.
