Hi Guys,

Please could someone help me plan my upcoming Ale Trail.
I will start at Dewsbury and travel straight to Stalybridge, and then start coming back to each station in turn on the trail ending up back at Dewsbury.
Can someone inform me of what sort of ticket(s) i would need to do this trip.

Thank you in advance
Ash

Welcome to the forum, ashterrier!

Assuming you intend to complete this marathon drinking session within one day, and that pub opening hours mean you don't have to set out before 0930, an Off-Peak Day Return Dewsbury - Stalybridge will do the job. This costs £10.90, or £7.20 if you hold an appropriate Railcard.

Dewsbury ~ Stalybridge Day Ret, last time I did it.

Some folk do Batley also.

Batley Cellar Bar, Dewsbury West Riding, Mirfield Navigation, Huddersfield Head of Steam, (Kings Head also), a few in Linthwaite, and Slaithwaite, Marsden Railway, Greenfield Railway, Mossley Britannia, to Stalybridge.

If I've forgotten any, it's fairly obvious why.

The full tour we did was

Man Vic - Hare & Hounds, Sude Hill
Ashton - 'Spoons (Start here for early start)
Stalybridge- Buffet Bar
Mossley - Brittania
Greenfield - Railway
Marsden - Riverhead
Slaithwaite - Commercial
Slaithwaite - Swan (now closed I think)
Hudds - Station Tavern (Kings Head)
Hudds - Head of Steam
Mirfield - Navvy
Dewsbury - WR Refreshment
Batley - Cellar Bar
Leeds - Leeds Brewery Tap
Leeds - 'Spoons

It took some planning as the timings don't allow for a straight journey.
Can't offhand remember the exact path but it went something like

Huddersfield
Ashton
Victoria
Greenfield
Mossley
Stalybridge
Dewsbury
Mirfield
Batley
Leeds
(Huddersfield)
Marsden
Slaithwaite
Huddersfield

Probably could extend it on stations through to York as well as I've done a couple of times. Probably not best to have a pint at each pub though...

Lightweight ;)

Seriously though you run out of time to do any more.
I will put the times we used up later today when I find them.

We did it on a South Pennine Day Ranger. Currantly £19

I don't think I could have any more than 14 pints, although depends how much I've had to eat and how long the day is. Certainly wouldn't want to be standing on a station needing to go for a pee, to find out the train is delayed/cancelled or the toilet is broken

As promised.

The Real REAL ALE TRAIL (well it was my birthday do)

09.30 Hudds > 10.05 Ashton ('Spoons)
(plenty of time for a 'Spoons Breakfast to line the stomach, I lined mine with Phoenix Thirsty Moon as well, good start)
12.05 Ashton > 12.20 Man Vic (Hare & Hounds)
(chosen over Marble Arch, too far to walk, there and back, for us oldies!)
13.27 Man Vic > 13.51 Greenfield (Railway Hotel)
(resist having that extra pint)
14.51 Greenfield > 14.55 Mossley (Brittania)
(see Greenfield)
15.55 Mossley > 16.00 Stalybridge (Buffet)
(Black peas ordered but never appeared, do they really exist?)
16.26 Stalybridge > 17.09 Leeds (Spoons & Leeds Tap, only halves in both these)
(speed and platform knowledge the essence here)
17.43 Leeds > 18.08 Mirfield (Navvy)
(grumpiest landlord ever! Or was it the 8 of us being a bit "loud"?)
18.39 Mirfield > 18.49 Batley (Cellar Bar)
(don't get the wrong platform! Thankyou Mr Northern Rail Driver/Guard for waiting while we wobbled over)
19.27 Batley > 19.31 Dewsbury (WR Refreshment)
(meal arranged here. Eating isn't cheating!)
20.31 Dewsbury > 21.02 Marsden (Riverhead)
(leave more time than you may think you need to get back up the hill!)
21.59 Marsden > 22.03 Slaithwaite (Swan then Commercial)
(Swan was closed last time I was in Slaithwaite since the do)
23.36 Slaithwaite > 23.44 Hudds (Station Tavern & Head of Steam)
(arranged with Bruce at Tavern & Manager of Head about times, thanks to both)
Carriages at 01.00

Sounds good, I would do that with the one amendment and get to Huddersfield early, can't beat the brekkie at the station buffet there

The Swan at Slaithwaite is open (but no longer under the same management as The Commercial) An alternative/additional Slaithwaite opportunity is The Wharfeside, a Copper Dragon pub.

Black peas do exist at Stalybridge, although they seem popular so probably ran out.
