SFC means what?
It's currently live from Victoria to Baguley Fold, a couple of miles, and according to previous posts will be extended to Stalybridge, where the wires end, in about a week; Guide Bridge to Stalybridge will follow in March.I very rarely travel to/through Manchester Victoria, but did so on Saturday. Excuse my ignorance, but I assume the 'juice' is not yet switched-on at all to the east of Manchester Victoria, despite all the infrastructure seemingly being in place for a good few miles towards Huddersfield?
Static Frequency Converter. In railway terms it's a feeder station that uses solid state electronics instead of a transformer, so unlike traditional feeder stations it balances the load across all three phases of the grid, and doesn't need a connection to the highest voltages of the grid.SFC means what?
At Huddersfield. Are there any other indication of things happening?
Excellent pictures, thanks to you and Stibz. It's really getting going now.I Have "Stibz" photobucket saved in my favourites who posts on here

Thanks for that, never heard of it before and I have worked on Electrification schemes in the past. Yes the drop off, short stay area and car park beyond are shut.At Huddersfield.
Loads of signage about the car park being closed. I’ve not actually seen the car park.
The viaduct has lots of digging happening next to where it hits the ground. Around the bottom of the pillars. All the vegetation along the back of Halfords has been cleared out.
SFCs have been mentioned several times in electrification threads on here. The first in the UK has just been completed at Hambleton where the ECML crosses the Leeds-Hull line. Thanks for that, never heard of it before and I have worked on Electrification schemes in the past. Things change.
For SFC benefits take a read of this postThanks for that, never heard of it before and I have worked on Electrification schemes in the past. Things change.
Not quite the first; Potteric Carr (south of Doncaster) was the first. Hambleton, however, is the world's largest!SFCs have been mentioned several times in electrification threads on here. The first in the UK has just been completed at Hambleton where the ECML crosses the Leeds-Hull line.
ECML Power Supply Upgrade
The SFC could be programmed to detect that regen is occuring and reduce the SFC voltage accordingly though. That's exactly what the reply on LinkedIn says. It's not a dumb transformer, the power flow can be actively managed by the SFC electronics. I'm not a rail electrification guy (but I have...www.railforums.co.uk
So how long before we see a Northern or a TPE with a pan up along this section though? The wires are now live between Vic and Stalybridge, they where switched on, on new year's day with a test train due sometime next week.
I posted on here a while ago.

I'd say may for northern, Dec for tpe.So how long before we see a Northern or a TPE with a pan up along this section though?
We've had this discussion before. Entry into service date will see both 769s and 802s using the OLE. Late Feb or March likely.I'd say may for northern, Dec for tpe.
Even earlier, probably remember it but I'm not going that far back into the thread. We've had this discussion before. Entry into service date will see both 769s and 802s using the OLE. Late Feb or March likely.
im guessing its all prep work right now?some pictures around Huddersfield station on Wednesday
At the current rate of progress I think there's a good chance that the 333s may have been withdrawn by the time the electrification has been completed....and maybe the 331s too!Is there a chance that we could end up seeing 331s or maybe even 333s make their way to way York once Electrification works are complete?
I don’t know. I didn’t stay to watch them work. Depends what you mean by prep. I don’t think any track or buildings affected yet.im guessing its all prep work right now?
Some of mast foundations are now in.Had a look on AIVR on the CFM route (Church Fenton - Micklefield) - foundations have been at least marked out for circa 4km SW of the A162 underbridge (CFM/5) at Barkston Ash; not quite the whole way to Micklefield, but a good chunk of the way!
The footage was taken in the last days of December so the situation may well have changed since; the line has been closed for further engineering work this Sunday just gone (21/01/24), and will be closed again next Sunday (28/01/24) and the Sunday after that (04/02/24).
Also see https://thetrupgrade.co.uk/A162/ - this details the piling extents that took place over Christmas.
I'm 80 in March. I'm hoping to make a journey from Wigan to Bolton by electric train. My mother lived till she was 99.9!At the current rate of progress I think there's a good chance that the 333s may have been withdrawn by the time the electrification has been completed....and maybe the 331s too!
relatively easy section and from an efficiency point of view makes absolute sense to keep on heading towards Leeds using existing site setup and resources. So that would confirm that we are now definitely seeing wiring from Church Fenton (North Junction) to Micklefield, although not specifically announced!

I have said it before and I will say it again: “under promise and over deliver “ is a great way of doing things. So that would confirm that we are now definitely seeing wiring from Church Fenton (North Junction) to Micklefield, although not specifically announced!

There was definitely piling on the Leeds bound line covering something like a mile worth of track. Saw it yesterday on my way to York. It starts maybe a mile or two away from Curch Fenton (distances are complete guesses, I wasn't paying that much attention). So that would confirm that we are now definitely seeing wiring from Church Fenton (North Junction) to Micklefield, although not specifically announced!
