It won't take longer, and that factor would be negated by other factors

Whilst people ponder the tree dilemma, I do have another question for you all.

Which two British mainland railway stations are 19.5miles apart in a straight line but to travel between your three methods of transport for the journey are; going on push bike it'll take just over 2 hours. If you go purely by car it will take 2hrs 30min. If you want to go by train it will take 14hrs 30min!? (I think this one is quite easy TBH)

Absolutely correct on the station question. Did you know they actually sell a ticket for that train journey too? Even the Off-Peak is somewhere near £100 due to the mileage. So I wonder if they've ever sold one of them, considering the cost, time and you can only do it once per day without an overnight somewhere.

Being as the tree question has people stumped (even I groaned as I typed it!) i shall give my hopefully correct answer. When I made the first cut the tree was nice and healthy. After a few days it'll be weaker due to being unable to supply of nutrients and fluids from the roots as well. Particularly if I made the cut higher up than the previous one too.

Surely that woun't actually be the case, as you only cut 10 cm into it, so the nutrients would still be able to get to the rest of the tree via the other 20cm of uncut trunk :?

Shortest route from Kyle of Lochalsh to Mallaig

Distance: 425 miles 62 chains
From Kyle of Lochalsh to Dingwall, to Inverness, to Perth via Aviemore, to Stirling, to Larbert, to Croy, to Glasgow Queen Street, to Partick (Low level lines), to Hyndland, to Dalmuir via Yoker, to Dalreoch, to Cardross, to Crianlarich, to Mallaig.

Off peak return via Aviemore: £131.80. There's also an any permitted at £169.40, not sure which way that lets you go. It's mental. Shoeburyness to Sheerness on Sea is 6.5 miles in a straight line and 88m 38ch by rail, taking 3 1/2 hours, second closest that I can find.

I'm going to post a question that's a trick in terms of figuring out my almost limerick.

I remember these things as a young lad,
Something that almost every station had,
Still very useful but hardly ever found,
They're fixed to a wall or on the ground,
Apparently it is for our own good,
That they are no longer where they stood.

So, what could "they" be?
Rhyming answers are not required :D

On my way to work this morning, I noticed a shop with a poster in the window:

"50% off

and then an extra

20% off all items."

Assuming this isn't one of those "UP TO xx% off" things, and that the item in question does indeed qualify for the full discount advertised on the poster - how much would an item cost that previously cost £100?

Yep! Not the 70% that they'd want you to think at first glance!

1. A fishing boat is lying in the harbour. There is a rope ladder hanging over the side with its end touching the water. The rungs of the ladder are 1 metre apart and the tide is rising at 50 centimetres an hour.
At the end of 6 hours, how many of the rungs will be covered?

2. Would a steel ball travel faster through water at 25c or -5c?

None, the boat will rise at the same rate as the tide because it is floating.

(I think I may have asked that one a few pages back too :p)

25c, because it cannot move through ice.

Adam and Ben are both twin brothers.

One day Adam celebrated his birthday and two days later Ben celebrated his. How is this possible?

Rather, one was born at 23:59 on Monday and the other at (say) 00:01 on the next Wednesday morning. The key to this one isn't the times. If twins are born on different days, it doesn't matter that they're twins, they have different birthdays and there's nothing you can do about it. In reality, this is unlikely to happen; 24 hours between the babies wouldn't happen. If it did, medics would certainly intervene.

Also, in your original post, you said that Adam and Ben were twin brothers. You didn't say that they're each other's twin brother, so is it that, whilst they're twins, they're not each other's twin? (If you know what I mean)

They're not each other's twins.

Or, you never said they had birthdays 2 days apart, only that they celebrated them two days apart.

Thought you were busy doing revision mr mojo ;)

One of them was born the day after the other??

Their mum like Shannon Matthews thought that they came from the same dad, and thought this mean they were twins ?
