Gents,

Just dotting the Is and crossing the Ts on a new car! Thing is, it's in Peterborough. They want to charge me £184 for delivery to my home address!

Obviously, it'll work out cheaper to pick it up. So my questions are these:

1. If I buy the walk up Standard Open Single at £35.30 (YP disc) then can I travel via Leeds? Or via London? Or do I have to go via Sheffield and Nottingham or Doncaster kinda way?

2. I can travel for free on Virgin services between Friday and Monday. Can you find a cheaper option than buying a £17.10 Cheap Day Single from London to Peterborough?

3. If I'm buying a ticket for the full length of the journey, are there any decent ticket splits to bring the cost down?

Your help is invaluable, as always :)

I forget your local, but Liverpool Stations to Peterborough is indeed £35.30 for an SOS.

For the routeing of this ticket, check the Routeing Guide on ATOC's website (they are both Routeing Points, so this is easy but if you get stuck, let us know which part you get stuck on and we'll help :))

It's a reasonably priced ticket actually. Splitting may be cheaper (do you have Avantix Traveller?) however perhaps not as Leeds-Peterborough and Sheffield-Peterborough alone cost MORE than Liverpool-Peterborough!! Splitting at Nuneaton doesn't help either (in the event of a Liverpool train calling there, that can be a useful interchange!) A few other searches on Avantix don't bear fruit, I really think £35 is not a bad price for this ticket, compared to other fares!

If you don't mind the early start, how about:

(On a Monday or Friday)
Liverpool Lime St dep 0527 Crewe arr 0600 (VT)
Crewe dep 0629 Nuneaton arr 0706 (VT)
Nuneaton 0751 Peterborough arr 0906 (XC)

All you need then is a NUN-PBO single.
SVS with a Y-P is £15.50
SOS with a Priv is £7.50

Better on Saturdays, with services at 0547, 0748 and 0848 direct LIV-NUN, although every journey seems to have a 55 min or so connection at NUN.
Likewise, Sundays- 0938 and 1038 services LIV-NUN.

Right Gents,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Liverpool to Peterborough is valid via maps ER+WK+LY so therefore I can travel via Leeds?
Hopefully?

Agreed. ER+WK+LY allows travel via Earlestown, Todmorden and Leeds. If you want to travel on the direct Liverpool - Leeds trains via Warrington and Stalybridge, you would be using ER+WK+TP, a different Permitted Route combination which is also valid.

If you're travelling on a Mon or Fri you'd need to check the SVS restriction isn't 2V, otherwise not valid till 09:30.

Agreed, and the Nuneaton - Peterborough SVS fare does indeed carry Restriction 2V. The cheapest available at 0751 is the £30 SOS, £19.80 with a Railcard.

If you get down early Monday morning there's a £9.15 advance fare on the 0935 EC service from Kings Cross (you'd be leaving Lime Street 0605 - the 0700 is probably pushing it). And a £10.85 on various later ones.

But Virgin allow peak time travel with off-peak tickets when discounted by a railcard, no?
But you won't be travelling with Virgin on a Nuneaton-Peterborough SVS - you'll be travelling with XC. It's not going to be valid via London is it?

Virgin do, but XC operate this route.

XC continued the concession for a short period, to avoid bad publicity, then quietly dropped it.
