If you could have any formation of coaches for day and or sleeper services what would it be ? For example Mk1 compartments, Mk2 lounge or mk1 restaurant and mk5 sleepers for a sleeper (just a bit of fun)

Too far from an HST...
I think the LNER teaks being on the mainline one more time would look pretty awesome.
Although to ride in maybe I'm a little plain but a full VTEC/LNER HST set on the ECML would be pretty special to me. Pie in the sky now though sadly.

I have a fantasy every time I'm subjected to a long journey with Cross Country, that instead of a cramped, smelly rattly, vibrating Voyager, I'm in an alternative reality where train travel evolved rather than devolved and I'm travelling in a long, loco hauled rake of comfortable, smooth quiet coaches. Essentially what MK1's should have evolved to by 2024. Spacious, cosy lighting, comfy seats, excellent onboard facilities. Everything a passenger deserves when travelling for many hours on a train for a lot of money.

The ICE Neo is by far the most comfortable train I have used. That standard of interior is what we should have here, including the at-seat service of draught beer

That would be nice. Aberdeen to Penzance would be a really nice journey if it wasn't for the voyagers, shame that travel quality has seemingly diminished over the years.

Mark 3, with IC70 seats and a Valenta engined power car at each end.

SBB Panoramawagen with some ÖBB Nightjet cars. Knock spots off anything we have. A dining car too, possibly WRmz

My dream rolling stock would be a 125mph version of the Stadler Flirt

The vehicles used on the RhB set the standard for me. Plenty of table seats, bins under a flap in the table, clear PIS screens which tell passengers everything they need to know, a decent amount of cycle storage, the trains get strengthened during high demand, the PA is concise...

The Glacier Express coaches cannot be beaten in my view, Standard Class pictured:

A TGV Euroduplex (last gen of existing stock), Orange livery, with a proper French restaurant car (same concept maybe as GWR Pullman Dining) that could hypothetically be put in place of the cafe car, with the cafe being relegated to the lower level, the seats of the first gen of Duplex and proper service.

Woodhead on LNER teaks pulled by an EM2.

I'd also like to sample the 506s and then on the east side of the Pennines take a class 114.

Another vote for Siemens ICE 3 NEO for XC. Soft lighting, a sit down restaurant car etc etc

A rake of Mk1 opens with a buffet car and some English Electric power up front with a thrash merchant driving.
The only two things I can add to that:

Declassified First Class Mk1s.

Double headed EE traction.

Any trailer vehicle (no engines below) that has comfortable padded seats, all seats aligned with windows, good heat/AC, draughtless end doors, subtle lighting and absolutely minimal PA announcements.

Dead simple, but seemingly so difficult.

I think it would have to be a mk3, mix of compartments and open. Sprung seats, moveable armrests, respectful/adjustable lighting. Grey and burgundy colours.. (greater anglia ish), sliding door, drink facilities ie, fridge full of cold drinks, filter coffee etc., and everything that @Harpo said.

That's pretty much close to how a Voyager would have felt if it had been available as an electric unit.

First gen DMU where you can sit behind the cab's glass wall and see the journey.

Forget the Black 5s, I'd love to have a ride on a 101 power twin from Fort William to Mallaig.

A bi-mode version of the Pendo (a hypothetical Class 890) for EMR with a Midland Mainline service offering - at-seat service with a decent menu in First and free tea & coffee for Standard class passengers.

Upon full electrification of the MML, diesel engines get swapped out for batteries.

I think the Voyager’s diesel engines are the least of it’s problems to be honest!
I'd disagree with that. Had there been very little beneath the soul bar there'd be ample space to place the various components which on the Voyagers are mounted on the roof, case in point the cess tank so no Voyager smell, as well as a much more spacious saloon. The Voyager's body profile does resemble that of an Acela's passenger carriage, both being built by Bombardier, so that's probably the closest point of reference to what a Voyager without any engines would feel like.

Ideally such a hypothetical unit would be an electric 221 and thus a competitor to the Pendolino product, so the train would have the heavier and smoother riding design of bogie, rather than the awful eco-flex design found on 220s and newer multiple units.

As for my pick for dream British rolling stock, I'd say some incarnation the cancelled Intercity 250 trains. Ideally these would have had a power car at either end rather than the planned push-pull setup and could have essentially been a British loading gauge version of the DB ICE 1s or FS ETR 500, featuring spacious and comfortable interiors and a high quality dining coach. What really would have made the experience great would have been their introduction coinciding with the planned straightening out of the WCML and mooted electrification of the GWML which would have enabled 155mph running on both routes.

Not much point in opening the buffet then ;)

And as someone who likes his ale, you can leave out the EPB and the HAP motor coaches as well, except for the shortest trips :)

I did actually think about how you’d get to the buffet; you’d have to board the BEP during a stop. It would add to the fun! :D

A hybrid pendalino with 5-9 cars as standard instead of the 220/221/222 but know there could be a few platforms that may need a grinding machine!
