Just wondering

1) Where the location with the highest permissible speed restriction (PSR) at the final signal approaching buffers is?

The highest I can think of on routes I’ve signed are Windermere with a 60mph PSR at the fixed distant board and Manchester Airport with a 50 mph restriction at the single yellow.

Many other terminal stations or dead-end platforms seem to have the final signal much closer to the platform and either at or close to a lower permissible speed (eg Manchester Piccadilly/Liverpool Lime St etc).

Does anyone know of any higher permissible speed approaches or if there is a maximum in the standards?

are you sure about that ? As far as I know there is no 75 mph between Georgemas and Wick, the highest speed permitted is 70 for a stretch but mostly 60 mph between Wick and Georgemas

Am I reading that correctly, the speed limit is 75 mph for the final half-mile or so approaching the buffers at Wick?

Approaching Chester from Crewe it’s 65mph at the last signal, although if you’re going into a bay platform you’re brought down to a red.

At what distance does the speed limit reduce to less than 75 mph?

The permissible speed drops from 75 mph to 60 mph at the first set of points (161m 18ch), then to 15 mph at the start of the platform (161m 24ch). The distant board is at 160m 35ch, so in practice the train's speed will be well under 60 mph before it reaches 161m 18ch.

The 1989 Sectional Appendix updates showed the 75 mph ending at the buffer stop.

Location
Bristol
Penzance approach is 70mph right up to 24ch short of the blocks, where it drops right down to 15mph.
