Random thing I'm wondering about,

So it's a well known fact that you can buy a single point-to-point ticket between any two UK stations, regardless of whether the stations have a direct connection or changes are needed

Also, London forms the backbone of the UK rail network. In general, you can get a train from point A to point B, and point B to London.

Then you can normally go from London to point C, and point C to point D. Thus, between any point A and point D, the maximum number of changes will be 3 (excluding travelling between two different London terminals)

Any examples of points A and D which require 4, 5 or even 6 stations?

Stourbridge Town to St Ives, 5 Changes

Stourbridge Town - Stourbridge Junction

Stourbridge J - Worcester Shrub Hill

Worcester Shrub Hill - Cheltenham Spa

Cheltenham - Exeter St Davids

Exeter - St Erth

St Erth - St Ives

I appreciate the start and end points lend themselves to adding changes to any journey :)

Apologies if I've misunderstood and London was a requirement.

This one comes up regularly, check the archives. The main one is Bourne End to Dingwall

If you check for this Monday it requires between 4, 5, 6 or 7 changes, at most visiting:-

Marlow
Bourne End
Maidenhead
Paddington
Euston
Glasgow Central
Glasgow Queen Street
Inverness
Dingwall

You could do it in less

Stourbridge Junction to Birmingham Moor Street

Birmingham New Street to St Erth* (on one of the few XC services which run to Penzance) ;)

Can be done with just 3 changes, one of which is an intracity change

Bourne End to Paddington
(Hop across London to King's Cross)
King's Cross to Inverness
Inverness to Dingwall

OK I'll play. Emerson Park to Stourbridge Town and back in a day appears to throw up quite a few changes, especially if you avoid using the tube.
Romford
Stratford
Willesden Jn
Euston
Birmingham New St
Smethwick Golton Bridge
Stourbridge Jn

Do it the other way round and you can take advantage of the through trains between Stourbridge Jn and Marylebone, but you would still need two tube trains to get between Marylebone and Liverpool St unless you walked to Baker St.

Any strictly Barton Line station (Healing, Goxhill etc) to Marlow:
Barton to Habrough/Grimsby/Cleethorpes
Habrough etc.. to Lincoln
Lincoln to Kings Cross
Kings Cross to Paddington
Paddington to Bourne End
Bourne End to Marlow

On a Saturday, you could jig it up by going direct to Worksop, down the Robin Hood Line to Nottingham then go into St Pancras.

How does this sound

Sundridge Park
Grove Park
Charing Cross
Kings Cross (involves at least one change on LU)
Eaglescliffe/Northallerton
Middlesbrough
Ruswarp

(Apart from summer Sundays when the Whitby trains run further then Middlesbrough, but good luck getting from Sundridge Park on a Sunday ;))
