Seeing as food threads seem to be popular at the moment (and inspired by the sauce thread), what are some unconventional food combinations that you enjoy and/or would recommend?

I've got a few, some of which aren't as weird as all that, but still combine sweet and savoury flavours in a way that those of a more conservative palate might baulk at:
First up is adding a couple of squares of very dark (80-90% cocoa solids) chocolate to chilli-con-carne as it cooks. Not that unusual these days, but I'd still recommend it.
Another is peanut butter with either maple syrup or honey, as a pancake topping- the sweetness of the honey/syrup works surprisingly well with the saltiness of the peanut butter. Not sure it would work with the more "floral" varieties of honey though.
Finally, carrot sticks dipped in Nutella really shouldn't work, but somehow it does.

Any other "weird but wonderful" combinations? Or just things that would make anyone else respond with the emoji (for those using screen-readers, that's the 'being sick' one) until they actually try it?

I'm not sure if unusual but not for the faint of hearted, Marmite and the spreadable version of St Agur blue cheese on bread/bagel/cracker.

I use mint sauce on roast beef and chicken as well as lamb. It actually works very well with them.

When it comes to chips, I like to melt butter ( actually I use Flora Original at home, but butter when in a restaurant ) over them. Tastes very good. Just don't tell my doctor...

I went through a phase, in around 1996 or so, of putting Marmite on chips (often when I was out of brown sauce). A bit bizarre but it kind of tasted good.

Cold baked beans as part of a salad - one I inherited from my parents but which my GF thinks is just weird
Mucky puddle - a 50/50 mix of coke and orange juice
I also used to get funny looks in the office whenever I dunked a Double Decker or Snickers into my tea.

Pineapple on pizza (great idea for a poll btw!).
Mayonnaise on chips.
Sweet chilli sauce on fish.
Ketchup on everything (when I was younger!)

Never in a month of Sundays! Pizza - which is Italy's national street food - is 100% for savoury ingredients only. This nonsense of putting pineapple slices on pizza is a purely American idea - perhaps inspired by Hawaii - and you will never see it in Italy....in fact you could probably be thrown out of some pizzerie for requesting it! If you want to eat pineapple, order it as a dessert after you've finished eating your pizza.

Cold mashed potato mixed with grated cheese and tomato sauce on the side. Lovely!
Pineapple on pizza? Hawaiian is my favourite :D
I also enjoy cold baked beans or rice pudding straight from the tin (but not at the same time).

Due to my mother not washing a knife when making a packed lunch, I gained a taste for peanut butter and onion sandwiches. I haven’t eaten them for years, but I don’t really like peanut butter anymore.

None of those strike me as particularly unusual to be honest... and people who pretend to be offended by pineapple on pizza need to get over themselves and have an original thought for a change. It's such a tired cliché these days!

They also need to try it, it's fantastic. Especially when combined with anchovies... which some might think is a bit odd but it's yet another sweet/salty combo that I rather enjoy.

Italians are very wedded to their traditions, it has to be said! ;)

Italians gifted the idea of pizza to the world, they can't then complain when other countries later improve on it! ;)

"Hawaiian" pizza was apparently invented in Canada... the Italians should just be grateful they didn't put maple syrup and poutine on it!

To a point, i wonder if Italians in the 15th century were sniffy about these new fangled tomatoes that someone bought over from the new world. They'll never catch on...

Canadians may have invented the Hawai'ian, but New Yorkers invented the New York pizza. And there is none finer in the whole wide world.

Anyway back to weird stuff on pizza, I have a pizza with black olives and onions along with spicy meats. Oh yes!!

There used to be a restaurant near me which specialised in unusual pizza, they even did a christmas dinner pizza which sounds absolute vile but unfortunately the place closed down (or rather reverted to a normal kind of menu) before i had the chance to try it...

One guy at my university likes cheddar cheese chunks dipped in Biscoff spread. I didn't think it too bad myself when I tried some.

I was once known to be partial to a Bourbon biscuit dipped in tomato ketchup.

And I maintain that the only drinkable thing out of tea or coffee is rooibos tea with honey, and a chocolate bar for dunkage. Preferably a Twix.

And grated cheese improves anything involving meat or chips (unless it's seafood).

I once dropped a chocolate biscuit into chicken soup when I was in my teens, never again, wasn't pleasant but I ate it. Never tried it since.

Isn't that the complete opposite of what this thread is supposedly about? Although possibly worthy of a separate thread of its own.

Nothing weird about that....especially in Calabria, where the local Nduja sausage is infused with dried red chillies and is considerably spicier than chorizo. ;)

Honey with cheddar cheese; on its own or in a sandwich.

Hot cross buns with cheddar filling.
