What is the longest possible train journey suggested by NRE that can be done in one day? My opening example is Kyle of Lochalsh to Manea which is shown as taking 15 hours and 35 minutes changing at Inverness, Edinburgh and Peterborough and Norwich, leaving at 06:15 and arriving at 21:50 the same night

I've found a journey from Wick to Portsmouth Harbour that takes 16 hours and 53 minutes. Leaving Wick at 0802, it is possible to finally pull into Portsmouth Harbour at 0055, changing trains at Inverness, Edinburgh, Watford Junction and Clapham Junction. It also involves using trains operated by four different companies (ScotRail, Virgin, Southern and South West Trains).

A Super Off-Peak Single is available for this journey, at a fairly reasonable £183.80!!

You can do Penzance to Mallaig in a proper day leaving at 0630 and getting in before midnight. Not sure of the miles but it goes via Newcastle so it must be a fair whack

I've got one which might or might not count.

Wick to Great Yarmouth - 20 hours 13 minutes. No vegging on it either.

Wick 16:00 - 20:10 Inverness
Inverness 20:44 - 05:37 Crewe
Crewe 05:47 - 06:57 Birmingham NS
New Street 07:22 - 09:13 Peterborough
Peterborough 09:43 - 11:15 Norwich
Norwich 11:36 - Great Yarmouth 12:13.

One journey, no vegging, on the sleeper. I propose it counts!

But as it involves a journey on the sleeper this is technically over two days.

I've found one that beats it, Ardgay to Penzance
Depart Ardgay 06.16 arrive Inverness 07.44
Depart Inverness 07.55 arrive Edinburgh 11.17
Depart Edinburgh 12.08 arrive Penzance 22.41 total journey time 16 hours 25 minutes.

I assume there must be a rule that you can only use permitted routes between the start and end points and you must use direct services between any two points otherwise you could "zig-zag" your way from south to north or north to south only using slow moving stopping services?

Mallaig to Pwllheli, departing on the 06:03 and arriving at 23:32, changing at Glasgow, Wolverhampton and Machynlleth. Now that sounds fun.

Between the parallel lines
Using tomorrow as an example:

Heysham Port-Cork City
21hrs 37mins
or
23hrs 20mins
(depending on options for changing trains as shown on NRE)

Changing at Lancaster, Crewe, Holyhead and Dublin, and from there running either direct to Cork or changing at Mallow (the latter being quicker).

EDIT:
How about Fearn-Cork City? If part of the journey wasn't cancelled tomorrow, it would take 23hrs 56mins minimum, according to NRE. Changes are at Inverness, Edinburgh and then as above from Crewe.

Would it be facetious to add "New Cross Gate-London Bridge"? ;)

If some cheating is allowed, then I submit for your approval: Rosslare Harbour to Wick. Depart 21:15, Arrive: 22:51 - 25 hours, 36 minutes.

And the price for this epic journey? £46.

Sail Rail is something you *have* to do.

Can't say exactly what the mileage is but on 31st July last year I did Edinburgh (23:50) - Euston - Holyhead - Dublin - Belfast Central (21:00). Which was EPIC

I second that - last year I did (from Dundee) - via Fishguard once, via Holyhead twice (once to and once from), via Liverpool 3 times (twice to and once from) and via Cairnryan five (or maybe six) times.

Even if it's just to take advantage of the stupid fares.

The HSS ships are absolute beasts though - well worth the money to have a ride on one.

I prefer the Jonathan Swift - Irish Ferries' smaller version of the HSS. Back in 2003 Stena were making a big deal of their 99min crossing time from Holyhead to Dun Laoghaire. We left Holyhead 10mins behind the HSS, and three quarters of the way across overtook it :D, plus we were going direct to Dublin.

I'm not sure that I would class going to Dublin port as "direct to Dublin". Dublin port is far less accessible than Dún Laoghaire which has the DART and multiple bus services beside it.

The ferry terminal at Dublin Port is remotely located from the city and has only a shuttle bus to the city centre.

Keeping it strickly within 'one day' you can do Carstairs to Tralee (IRL) in 22:30

Departing Carstairs at 00:19 on the Euston bound sleeper and then arriving in Tralee just in time for last orders.

And you can do that for the bargain price of £69.90!!! Although DVT does cost extra.
