This may have been asked before, if so then I'll use the excuse that I'm looking for the current timetable but which two stations have the most frequent direct service between them?

What about stations at least 20 miles apart?

Stations at least 40 miles apart? (to remove Reading - Paddington from the equation)

Stations at least 50 miles apart?

Stations at least 100 miles apart?

Presumably most of them will involve a London terminal, but I'm curious regardless.

Edit: -

I guess as a point of clarification by "most frequent" I mean either most trains in a day (be it start of service to end of service or 00:00 to 23:59) or most trains in an hour (both off peak and peak)

Between the parallel lines
Presumably the Brixton-Seven Sisters section of the Victoria Line would be an obvious potential answer, if we can include the Tube.

At least 20 miles apart?

I think that was just a possible category of answers to the question.

I'd say no to the tube, and wouldn't somewhere like Euston to Warren Street where both Victoria and Northern Line services overlap?

Is there anywhere online it's possible to get the distance between two stations on the railway network?

My initial thought for two more than 20 miles apart was Waterloo to Woking but not sure how far apart these are.

Are overtaken journeys included?

New Street - Euston (113 miles) is 5-6 per hour (2-3 overtaken). Same with Coventry - Euston (94 miles).

Leicester - St Pancras (99 miles) is 4 per hour.

Doncaster - King's Cross (156 miles) is 3-5 per hour (mostly 4).

Reading - Paddington (36 miles) too many trains an hour.

Basingstoke - Waterloo (47 miles) 7 per hour (2 overtaken).

Glasgow QS/Central - Edinburgh (about 45 miles) too many trains an hour.

The likes of Leeds - Man Picc/Vic (43 miles), Sheffield - Leeds (38 miles), Leeds - York (25 miles), Derby - New Street (39 miles), Derby - Sheffield (36 miles), etc, also have decent frequency.

Fenchurch Street to Leigh-on- Sea must be a contender. Six trains per hour off peak, 144 per day in total (according to thetrainline)

East Croydon - Haywards Heath or Brighton must get a fair few. I bet Gatwick Express inflates the London Victoria - Gatwick Airport services as well.

Surprised no one has mentioned Shenfield to Liverpool St.

A shade over 20 miles, 21 departures between 0730 and 0830.

Only because I was having my breakfast first ;)

13 trains per hour off peak too, although the 6 TfL trains get overtaken by the 7 GA trains.

Old Chinese proverb, you can't plan a timetable on an empty stomach :|

It will be interesting to see what the Liverpool St - Shenfield total will be by 2020 when the new GA and Crossrail timetables are in full flow.

Overall, definitely Waterloo to Clapham Junction 36tph off-peak (which I believe is more frequent than the peak, fewer fast trains stop in the peak). Including the tube, it's probably King's Cross St Pancras - Euston (incl Euston Square), which is 34 tph Victoria, 18 tph Northern, 12 Met, 6 Circle, 6 H&C, which adds up to 76 tph.

What about stations at least 20 miles apart?

I think that's Paddington - Reading (18 tph peak)

Stations at least 40 miles apart? (to remove Reading - Paddington from the equation)

This 10 mile gap is hard. I'm going to go London Waterloo - Basingstoke, 7 tph, both off and on peak.

Stations at least 50 miles apart?
Paddington - Didcot Parkway, 9tph peak

Stations at least 100 miles apart?

London Euston - Birmingham New Street, 7tph off-peak

That's superb work sir. Isn't BHM-EUS six trains per hour though?

XX:10 (Virgin) Scotland - Birmingham - London
XX:14 (LM) Birmingham - London via Northampton
XX:30 (Virgin) Birmingham - London
XX:34 (LM) Birmingham - London via Northampton
XX:50 (Virgin) Birmingham - London
XX:54 (LM) Birmingham - London via Northampton

To be doubly pedantic, in the opposite direction one of the LMs is operated as a separate service either side of Northampton, with separate Euston-Northampton and Northampton-New Street service (although the unit does in practice run through, it is just 'overtaken' at Northampton by one of the other services)

Manchester Piccadilly - Manchester Airport 10tph has to be the winner for the Greater Manchester area.

No, Piccadilly-Stockport beats that (14tph off-peak, as I make it...):
-3tph VT to Euston
-2tph XC via Birmingham
-1tph Stoke stopper (2tph in the peak)
-2tph Hazel Grove/Buxton
-2tph Hope Valley fast (Cleethorpes/Norwich)
-1tph Mid-Cheshire
-2tph Alderley Edge/Crew
-1tph South Wales

14tph (16tph peak) Liverpool Central - James St - is this considered like the tube (as it's underground)?

Glasgow Central - Kilwinning (26 miles) must be within a shout, at least in Scotland. 6tph off-peak with around 155 trains per weekday (according to thetrainline, at least).
