Doncaster-York - lots of flat land, fields, a few power stations ...
Derby-Stoke - lots of flat land, fields, a racecourse that's the first two with some fencing
Gainsbrough Central-Barnetby - the only thing of interest is the rarity of trains. Flat land, fields, etc ...

Newcastle to Sunderland - A dreary and awful journey, through various **** holes and old industrial areas that are just bleak....then you arrive in Sunderland Station!!!
I can't agree with that: It was my local line for the first eighteen years of my life, and even when making occasional visits back to the area it still holds my interest now. It could be claimed to be one of the more interesting sections of line in the country, as it's the only part of the national network that regularly offers passengers a driver's eye view, thanks to the Metro extension.

I would nominate either Birmingham to Wolverhampton, or Sheffield to Doncaster: Both feel like a real crawl through an economically deprived post-industrial environment.

The view of the river, Tobacco Warehouse (and others) provide some relief between Moorfields and Sandhills. And further north you have probably the only stretch of railway in England where you might - just might - see Red Squirrel from a train.
Have seen a red squirrel from a train on the Isle of Wight!

I see lots of red squirrels between York and Donny, which has often been cited here as boring. Always seems to happen when I’ve been in the Tap for some reason though.

Won’t HS2 be an unbelievably dull journey? Loads of it will be in tunnel or between noise reduction measures. Very functional travel with little sense of journey.
Obviously that is what most punters will want, as long as the Wi-fi/4G and sockets work.....

The topography of the bit through South/West Yorkshire might be a pretty good ride!

The Wirral line for me. Every time I have to travel along there I feel like the journey is taking forever as the whole route is so dull.
