If you found a TVM that would take cash (a feat in itself these days) and selected a Fare that was say £500 plus - one of those crazy priced 1st Anytime Returns....would it take the money?

IE - is there a maximum amount of cash they will take in one transaction :p

I've fed one around 200 squid before and it didn't like it, buzzed and hummed then spat it back out :(

Obviously the poor TVM doesn't like seafood and who can blame it? Next time try putting in cash :D

AFAIK I don't see why it wouldn't.

Not heard of a limit.

From experience of other types of self service equipment I'd be fairly confident there is a limit. Whether that limit is at a level which could impact on a ticket available from a TVM is another question!

S&B machines have a limit of 60 coins per transaction, or at least they did when they were introduced.

Is there a limit to how much cash on-train guards are permitted to carry about their person?
(I am not talking about statutory limits; rather limits imposed by Risk Officers of their company)

The original T&W Metro ticket machines only take about 10 coins and no more than eight of the same type of coin. No notes or credit cards. Thankfully, they are replacing them.

A ticket inspector tried to issue me with a PF once , as I was unable to buy a ticket; I had raided the penny jar to get 11 20p coins to pay for a £2.20 fare. (Otherwise I only had notes and credit/debit card.)

No. However, in my company we have got the option of paying in cash at any depot during the shift, not just our home one at the end.

Wouldnt it all depend on the size of the tubes that held the money inside the machine eg if a machine was only able to hold 50 pound in pound coins and had 46 in and your fare was 5 pound it would spit it back out the last pound cause it would go overloaded so you would have to use a smaller denomination.

The coin limit is usually because coins need to be held for a refund, before dropping down to a more secure cash box when the transaction is completed.

I am not sure how they manage notes.

I'll give that a try on Wednesday then :D

Neither of the above are fully correct, and I'm not going to reveal figures for security reasons but the figure the OP quotes would be a small amount overall for a large terminal station TVM use - in one transaction may be a different story. Suffice it to say I don't think any forum user will experience a problem with cash/note quantities.

In my previous job a million dollars cash was small change and less than 100 notes was classed as "sundries" We used pump trucks to move bulk stocks and rent-a-crates for "smaller" amounts!

I don't know about TVMs, but I've seen inside other vending machines that have specific slots for each coin type, that change can be doled out from- but also a much more capacious "overflow" bucket, so that this situation is avoided

(incidentally, on the partially-staffed West Anglia line stations the current limit for coin and cash TVM transactions is currently "£0" apparently in an attempt to reduce vandalism to them)

Ever been refused?

I used to pay in at depots up and down the country despite being based at a London depot. Well, people do insist on handing over £20 notes for £2 transactions, so killing two birds with one stone when ordering change.

Some cash officers don't like it if you're not at their depot but too bad!

There is something in the Money Laundering Regulations 2007 about paying with large amounts of cash :)

More and more of them nowadays use big hoppers which can hold a lot more coins then you would think. Also the note boxes can hold a good few grand. But what is in there is all dependant on the size of station and its patronage. Takes a bit for them to actually overflow into the overflow box on some machines.

Oddly enough a PERTIS has room for a good few hundred quid in coins in there too
