Ignoring crap traction for a moment, now we're almost rid of all the valentas, trains with plenty of room and potential for heads out do make a journey quite a bit better. Therefore:

1. Of the 27 and 47 past departures from Sheffield (when there are two departures) on weekdays, which is generally an HST?

2. I am traveling from Leeds to Oxford on the 22nd of May (a Saturday) and returning on the 23rd. I was hoping on an HST as far as Brum. My brother thought that it was likely that the 0615 from Leeds and the 0811 from Leeds would be HSTs, and returning, that the 1703, 1803 and 1903 from Birmingham all had potential to be HSTs.

Does anyone have any firm idea of which departures might be HSTs on those days?

From my knowledge an XC HST normally works the 0911 ex Leeds on weekdays...

Most Sheffield departures are 222s to get quicker paths. It says in the timetable
Current Timetable

From May 23rd

The majority of Sheffield services are now Meridian (apart from the peaks) with the HSTs now on the Nottingham services. The EMT timetable on their website shows whether its a 125 or a 222.

There is a Leeds to St Pancras though that could take the OP from Leeds to Derby at least on a HST. Can't for the life of me remember the times though.

XC HSTs, well they vary pretty much every week I'm afraid.

Generally the 28min past departures from Nottingham to SPX are HST's, and they're pretty reliable, although on occasion a 222 may turn up.

Oh, and don't put your head out, you risk losing it or damaging your eyes.

Hope this helps,
K'down.

These pretty much all go via Nottingham now unfortunately. The best times to catch a HST around Sheffield are probably weekday evenings heading northbound: 1825 STP-LDS, 1815 STP-SHF, 1955 STP-LDS and 1930 STP-LDS are all booked HSTs. Sunday is also a decent time, a good few Sheffield services are booked to be HSTs.

On Monday to Fridays the 06.00 LDS to PLY is an HST, and the 16.03 returning from New Street (i.e. the same train). All of the Reading services, including the 06.15 from Leeds, are Voyagers. You will only find XC HSTs on Leeds to Plymouth return to Edinburgh etc and the reverse. They do not operate any HSTs on Reading / Bournemouth duties and the only HSTs that might make their way to Manchester would be Summer Saturday (July & August) to West Country destinations.

The 06.27 Sheffield to St Pancras (i.e. 05.25 ex Leeds) is an HST as will be any other Leeds to St Pancras journeys.
