Morning all

I’m new to this forum.

Just wondering if anyone can shed any light for me please.

I applied for On Train Conductor role in Aberdeen back in March. I had an email 2 weeks ago inviting me to attend the assessment centre in Glasgow last week which was successful and then I had my interview on Wednesday this week.

Unfortunately I was so nervous I didn’t give a good interview and needless to say have had a rejection email. Saying I can reapply after 6 months.

Does anyone know why you have to wait 6 months and also if there is a limit to how many times you can apply for the same role? Also how long are your assessment results valid is it 2 years?

Many thanks

Presumably there is a wait because it costs them time and money to interview and if you don't have a wait people will just instantly reapply. It also gives time for something substantive to change. Companies don't want to waste time churning failed candidates again and again

Make sure you think about why you were nervous and what you feel went wrong in the interview, and work on improving your interview skills to overcome this.

I truly hope I don’t fail again and again!

Lots of people do, there's no shame in it! I know very few people who've been recruited as conductors who got through on the first attempt, at least not in recent times (as opposed to the Ex BR crowd who seemingly just knocked on the gaffers door and started the next day!). The competition is fierce - you need your interview to be perfect (along with all the other stages) to get in.

Take comfort from the fact you've already proved yourself capable of beating the sift and passing the tests - because those two stages are themselves massive hurdles. You know what you need to work on for next time - your interview technique - and now you've got at least 6 months to do so as hopefully knock it out of the park next time it comes around.

Thank you. Yeah I had heard how hard it was. First time I applied was nearly 2 years ago and was rejected immediately. So I was lucky to get to the assessment stage then interview. My fiancé is a driver with ScotRail and I know quite a lot of the staff so I think I was embarrassed I’d muck up and embarrass him if I didn’t have a successful interview hence the nerves went haywire!
I was so determined to pass the assessment I even stayed in Glasgow the night before so i was properly refreshed and focused!
Fingers crossed a position comes up again close to 6 months so I don’t have to resit the assessment part again.

I was in exactly the same position got threw to interview and mucked it up. Waited a year before reapplying and the interview couldnt of went better but was then put in a reserve pool for up to 6 months but got an email 4 months later to go down for a medical so have now got the job and loving every min. I would suggest before your interview next time get yourself on a few trains and ask the conductor questions as they like to see you have done lots of homework on the role. Any more questions just drop me a PM I be happy to help
