So, I'm interested to learn of examples of unusual rolling stock having been painted into mainstream TOC liveries. Sparked by a couple of photos of training carriages at FGWs St Philips Marsh depot; a Mk1 buffet and a Mk2 open both painted into current blue & pink fleet livery.

Are there any other oddities hidden away?

SWT have a few really odd unreliable old trains in a livery vaguely similar to their 450s... :D

Not sure if it's still there or not, but their used to be a exBR CCT at Wimbledon Park in the older stagecoach livery.

Can we see these?

I know some. The East Midlands Trains depot in Derby has 3 class-08 shunters in stagecoach rail livery. There is also an old diesel that is painted in London Underground colours which takes new tube trains from Derby to London. I think it's a class-20 but I'm not certain. The Stourbridge class-139s run by London Midland may count as unusual. Sheffield Supertram uses stagecoach rail livery.

This one is now outdated, but Midland Mainline used to run a bus service to Corby in their livery. This line has reopened.

A Class 303 was repainted into Network South-East livery in the early 1990s for departmental use:

Arriva Trains Wales had driving van trailers from class 90s on their colours.
Eurostar and Londom Midland also have a class 08 in their livery.
Southern has a loco in Gatwick express livery.
The Virgin train which derailed at Grayrigg has been reused as a static training vehicle.
And a class 31 is in Intercity swallow livery.

Why have FGW painted that MK2 coach when it's only used for training? Would it ever be used in service for summer crowd-busters or anything? It looks pretty smart!

At a guess, either:

1. To engender a sense of local pride; or
2. An apprentice training/practice exercise; or
3. It was falling apart and had to be painted, and the corporate colours were readily available; or
4. Any combination of the above!

I did see a photo of a NetworkSouthEast van (I think it was a transit, complete with yellow front) in a magazine years ago... Not sure if it was actually an NSE van or just an enthusiastic tribute though.

That one rings a bell although I can't find a pic of it.

NSE were rather fond of slapping their livery on anything that moved:

That bus gives an idea of what double deck stock might have looked like in the late 1980s had we had any... A sort of "Pacer-max"!

The van photo was, I think, in a copy of RAIL... But possibly back when it was known as 'Rail Enthusiast".

Similarly, there was a Departmental Class 302/305 hybrid set that carried InterCity colours - see http://www.flickr.com/photos/24041160@N02/8397055571

Or how about a HST coach (TRUK 40516) in NSE livery. There's a rather poor picture at http://www.southernelectric.org.uk/features/rolling-stock/442/img/rsmth_mk3demo.jpg

Wow, I knew a few big 4 designed coaches received blue & grey - most famously a Gresley buffet which survived until the late 70s - but not anything anywhere near that old. Does anyone know anything about the history of it?

Another pic of the same coach is here with a couple of other interesting blue/grey recipients, what looks like a flat wagon & open sided container to the left and a Pullman coach (of a different design to the ones in L+Y's other pic) to the right:

A few LMS sleepers survived long enough to receive standard blue/grey livery.

I think that's Virgin's new stock for the Preston to Blackpool leg of their new EUS - BPN service. We all know northerners like to feel hard done by so Virgin have obliged. It's still better than a Pacer.

Virgin Trains do offer a service between Southport and Preston. However, it's on a Stagecoach bus!
