Just popped over to the 'dark side'* (<D) after going to the Trafford Centre to see if I could improve on my picture of the station at Old Trafford.

When is the next United home game/next time a Northern service will be at the platform? Am I right to assume it is not a requirement to have a ticket for the match to pass through the turnstile?

*I support Everton but my hatred of Man United seems to have gone missing now Moyes is at the wrong end of the M62...

The next Manchester United home game is against Chelsea on August 26 (kickoff 20.00). Bit of an odd time so I'm not sure if the Northern services will be running as normal. Next one after that is against Crystal Palace on September 14 at 12.45.

I considered using the platform for the Play-Off final in 2011, but unfortunately Northern were not running shuttles as I understand they are funded by MUFC so only operate for their fixtures. I was under the impression that the only exit from the platforms are through turnstiles straight into the 'paid' area of stadium, though I could just as easily be wrong.

When i've been to old trafford, you exit the turnstyle into the outside of the ground, you can't actually get into the stadium (seating etc) without a match ticket...

I don't think my ticket was ever checked on the way out of the halt, through the turnstyles.

You don't need a match ticket to get through the turnstiles as myself and a few colleagues have gone through the turnstiles to have a nosey when there is a long turnaround time, occasionally a steward will let us go through a staff entrance into the ground, which I may add is quite astounding.

The last time I saw a train heading for Manchester United FC Station, it was absolutely packed full, even before it came into Piccadilly Platform 14. How on earth the approx 100 plus people waiting to use it got on I don't know but 'sardine special' would be a good description.

Thanks for this. :)

Is there anything stopping you from remaining on the inbound train when it arrives at the halt, then going back to Pic?

They were running that day, you mean for the Peterborough final? They were deffo running that day, because my dad used it to the game!!!

The exits enter out onto a concourse under the old main stand but not actually into the stadium itself. You still need to enter through the turnstiles into the ground.

Is it possible to leave MUF station without attending the football match? I mean, assuming you get off a train and leave the platform without going to a game

Yes, from the platform you emerge in the 'Munich Tunnel' opposite the turnstiles underneath the executive areas of the South Stand. Very much outside the ground itself though.
Guess you might have to walk to the nearest Metrolink if you're not going to the game.

As above or make your way to the ground for the return working.
The first return working usually leaves right on the final whistle meaning it's quite quiet.

The subsequent one is battered!!

Ah yes. We would have done this in the recent GM Challenge. Unfortunately my teammates managed to dissuade me - and we lost because of it! Now that I've been on the trains that stopped at Ardwick and Clifton I think this is my last shack! (oh darn I forgot Trafford Park + Humphrey Park grr).

Ah, I got that on a Bryn - Patricroft ticket :D Lovely cheap extension to the validity of the GM Ranger and allows a trip out to Huyton. Also saved waiting at Patricroft... desolate place.
