Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced voice recorder/dictaphone for our hobby?

There are several free apps for smartphones making them quite reasonable recorders, I'm on Android and on Play Store there are over 20 of them, about 75% of them rated over 4.5/5. If you have an apple device, there are probably similar apps of offer, - maybe not free though but just costing apple tax.

To save money, an old unused phone will do the job just as well. Still, if you are looking for a separate device, the oom H1 is fine. A little sensitive to handling noise though. I bought one when they first came out, don't know about the later incarnations of the H1. Picture here.

You don't need an App on iPhone, voice notes is a built in function to the operating system.

Just looked, 'Recorder' is on my Pixel because it came with Android. I was thinking of my last phone (Moto 8+) where I found a free sound recorder app on Play Store.

The older model(s) of this used a single AA battery which so long a decent alkaline lasted several hours.

The newer version(s) use 2 x AAA batteries. Decent alkaline only last 2-3 hours. I think you can run from USB using a Power Bank, however as I only use one occasionally but it is not mine I have not investigated.
I used to mount mine on a camera cold shoe as either an auxiliary stereo mic or as a fixed model c. The stereo pair is a bit too sensitive to wind so needs a 'dead cat'.

If you want something small and decent quality, take a look at Olympus/OM system recorders.

I've not owned any of their voice recording/dictaphone orientated models, but I own a couple of their small stereo recorders and they are pretty good.

You used the term dictaphone, these are devices I'm not familiar with, companies like Speakit Solutions might get you started with models to look at.

If by "our hobby" you meant recording trains then I would look at the Zoom recorders which are well respected, search for field recorders.

We use Zoom H1 (and variants) at work and they are great, they take a bit of abuse too. Sound is much better than you will get from any phone. If quality is important though I would also buy a table stand for it as they are prone to a bit of handling noise. We often tend to plug Rode mics (both wired and wireless) into them. The sound quality is better when using the Zoom's than it would be if we plugged the Rode mics straight into the cameras.

Edit we tend to use 'dead cats' with ours too if used for outdoors, but they don't need it if used indoors.
