I've started again on building a layout, lessons learned from the first attempt & building a new PC made the first route go a bit wrong.

This time I have based it on a period during the late 80's, early 90's. A time when I started working on the real life railway & a time that was happy before the chaos & stupidity of privatisation came upon us. There are some elements of older & newer in this as well though. Hopefully I can release this one although I have used a generic blueprint for the route, I tried to make my own blueprint but it would not work.

So far it has about 18 miles of route, a fast mainline & a slower old style branch, well I do drive the Heart of wales line so I know that some nice old style railway does still exist.

So a few pics from halfway along the main & up the branch, more will follow. :o

t1.jpg

Rednall Yard with a 47/3 on a freightliner awaiting the road.

t2.jpg

The back roads at Rednall yard. Typical 80's style BR yard with old derilict stock rotting away in the weeds.

t3.jpg

47343 awaits the road from Rednall yard.

t5.jpg

An IC service stops for passengers at Rednall station. The 47/4 has just worked in the Postal train now stabled in the back siding.

t6.jpg

Rednall station & the IC service to Swansea in platform 1.

t7.jpg

The Morning IC service to Swansea leaves Rednall.

...& into the Welsh countryside.

6.jpg

....& Arriving at Little Hope station. (Named because I didnt think the RS signalling could handle a junction station, but it does it perfectly, maybe I should remove the TPWS grids now).
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Now We leave the IC service & follow an empty MGR train up the branch to Llanbadr.

8.jpg

Little Hope station, mainline to the lower right, branch on middle left.

7.jpg

A 165 arrives at Little Hope from the branch line..........(Well I need 101's,150's & 158's really). :o

9.jpg

47 Hauled MGR heads off the main towards Llanbadr.

10.jpg

An occupation crossing just outside Little Hope. (Ex scotrail 47/7 has been allocated todays trip. Well BR was flexible at least, no wrong colour for train type stuff.)

11.jpg

We are heading for Dolau Box & the castle on the hill there.

12.jpg

Passing Dolau box & the loop.

13.jpg

Over a small bridge & into Dolau tunnel.

14.jpg

The other side of Dolau tunnel has a rather large viaduct, the terrain was too unstable to build a track on it. (Still scenery needed here)

15.jpg

Next station is valley, a few sidings & a loop on the otherside.

16.jpg

Valley Station.

17.jpg

After Valley station the line enters a very tight trackbed built on a a cliff edge, a low speed limit here.

18.jpg

19.jpg

The otherside of the valley has a tight road as well.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Well I have plenty of pictures of the route to flood this thread with. :D

Firstly a few from the same trip as last night.

22.jpg

The station approach at Llanbadr.

24.jpg

Llanbadr Station as we head towards the reception sidings. (Did I mention how much I need sprinters or a nice met cam...That NSE unit looks so out of place in wales!) :o

27.jpg

On the main, approaching the Reception sidings & past the stabling point, although the depot was actually closed a few years back it still is usually busy with loco's.

28.jpg

Past the marshalling yard at Llanbadr.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Well I have had a busy restday off with something rather special in RS. A little themed picture diary.

Monday november 1986 is todays era for these pictures.

A3.jpg

Mid Morning & 9T48, the morning tripper from Sugar Hill Yard, today it is hauled by a 47(350) as there is a shortage of the usual type 1's or 2's in the area! :o :D
The driver isnt happy as the train is running today as a class 9A rather than an 8 due to a special consist, 15mph max speed which is making his day a lot longer than normal.

A4.jpg

9T48 gets the signal into the down banker loop at Dolau as a class 2 has just left Little Hope station. The weather is also lovely today here in wales.

A5.jpg

The special consist on 9T48 is marshalled at the back of the train behind the empty open wagons that have been used for spoil during the weekends enginering works.

A6.jpg

A7.jpg

Ahhh now that would be the special consist then, thankfully Llanbadr yard is getting its Jocko's back.(I do remember that you are supposed to remove the conrods on 08's before hauling them long distances).

A9.jpg

2W65 leaves Little Hope & over the border into wales. Once again a type 4 (47/4) is heading this train due to a shortage of correct traction, normally this would be a class 31 diagram but they couldnt find any in service today!!???!! <hint hint> :D

A10.jpg

2W65 blast's over an occupation crossing......

A11.jpg

..........& climbs further into the Welsh countryside.

A12.jpg

A13.jpg

Past Dolau & 9T48, the signalman has done well to regulate the class 9. ;)

A14.jpg

Crossing the viaduct at Valley.

A15.jpg

Through Valley station, not a booked stop for this service.

A16.jpg

A17.jpg

A18.jpg

Up through the mountains slowly through the tight switchbacks.

A19.jpg

Approaching Llanbadr where it is booked to call at.

A21.jpg

A22.jpg

2W65 arrives at Llanbadr station.

A23.jpg

With a clear block behind for 45 minutes the signalman at Dolau sets the road for 9T48 & the driver trudges off.

A25.jpg

A26.jpg

Through Valley station, at least the slow pace has enabled the previous train to clear the block section ahead.

A27.jpg

A28.jpg

Up through the mountains.( for some reason the 08's are running! ;) )

A29.jpg

A32.jpg

A33.jpg

Through Llanbadr station. I must say I think these 08's are simply stunning! Congratulations on getting them perfect.

A34.jpg

A35.jpg

A37.jpg

A38.jpg

A39.jpg

A40.jpg

9T48 arrives in Llanbadr reception sidings, thanfully the driver is now booked passenger back to Sugar Hill. Plenty of time for a sleep in a cosy Mk1. ;)

Well I've covered the branchline in detail so thought I would share the bits of the mainline that have almost been finished. Once again a lot of pictures, hope you dont mind but I cant narrow it down which ones to share anymore than I have.

This time we are following a HST on a Swansea- Manchester service circa 1988.

r27.jpg

r28.jpg

The approaches to Little Hope station from the south.

r29.jpg

r30.jpg

Little Hope Station. The branch to Llanbadr peels away on the right where the 47 is waiting for the road.

s1.jpg

s2.jpg

The railway line from little hope runs northwards adjacent to the local eyesore (Motorway).

s3.jpg

s4.jpg

s5.jpg

s6.jpg

Through the english/welsh border countryside.

s7.jpg

s8.jpg

The next station on the mainline is Rednal, here we are passing the freight yard which still handles some speedlink services.

s9.jpg

Rednal platform & signalbox. The old box has been retained although gutted of mechanical equipment & instead using SSi mk1 NX panal signalling equipment. This box covers all the mainline signals from little hope up to just past Rosset where Sugar Hill PSB takes over. 1T10, our train is not booked to stop here.

s10.jpg

s11.jpg

Passing Rednal town & the up goods loop.

s12.jpg

s13.jpg

The countryside between Rednall & olivers viaduct.

s14.jpg

s15.jpg

s16.jpg

Olivers Viaduct & cottage with occupation crossing. Not a good place to fail in the middle of winter!

s17.jpg

Heading through the forest's between Olivers cottage & Rosset.

s18.jpg

s19.jpg

s20.jpg

The remains of Rosset yard, used occasionly. Greedy property developers have built unaffordable houses on the site of the yard & are still building a few more houses at the other end. These houses will be sold to people who will of course moan about the noise of the trains & campaign for the railway to stop running trains between 9pm & 9am. Well they tend to in real life. :o ;)

s21.jpg

The other end of Rosset yard prepares to get buried under tarmac & bricks thus giving no chance for regeneration of freight services from this town.

s22.jpg

The run round loops at the rear of the station afford an ease for regulating on this fast mainline.

s23.jpg

1T10 Powers through Rosset platform as the passengers await arrival of there class 150 service.........might be a long wait! ;)

s24.jpg

After Rosset a few miles away is the Shell Mex oil sidings, used quite often via a groundframe.

s25.jpg

1T10 passes the groundframe to the Shell Mex sidings............

s26.jpg

.....& towards the first of two tunnels.

s27.jpg

The other side of the tunnels is Ash Road station. Only served by local trains but still a nice station.

s29.jpg

s28.jpg

The old goods yard lies in ruins at Ash Road. The goods shed is however being used for the storage of some old road vehicles.

s30.jpg

Approaching Sugar Hill Yard the line is a four track formation with slow lines on the far sides. A freightliner trundles along the up slow. The line on the embankment to the far left is for the steel works.

s31.jpg

s32.jpg

s33.jpg

s34.jpg

Sugar Hill TMD

s36.jpg

s35.jpg

Sugar Hill TMD & Marshalling yard.

s37.jpg

Just a bit further along the line is Sugar Hill Station. The carriage sidings are the first thing you can see on the approach....

s40.jpg

s38.jpg

s39.jpg

s43.jpg

....On the right are the Pway & S&T sidings plus the S&T training centre where all signal types can be trained on away from the running lines.

s41.jpg

A view across to the PWay sidings at the south of Sugar Hill station.

s42.jpg

Sugar Hill Station.

s46.jpg

s47.jpg

s48.jpg

s49.jpg

S50.jpg

s51.jpg

Our train from Swansea arrives on platform 3.

s44.jpg

A 47 hauled stopper awaits the signal in bay platform 5.

s45.jpg

As we leave the railway for now this southbound HST gets the road & starts pulling away from the station heading towards Swansea & teh route we have just come from.

;)

That's a really stunning route Shane, excellent work!

Love the forlorn looking old yards and sidings, BR at it's best (or worst)! Cosford Yard was always that way before they took it up and turned it into that lovely old telecommunications lorry storage dump!

Yeah fella it is KRS.
I'm glad you all like it, phase 1 is coming along nicely now & almost done. Havent done an update on here for a few days so.....

Firstly the outskirts of Sugar Hill Yard have been started on, it's gained an extra yard based on Crewe sidings on the Crewe-Salop line & a freightliner depot opposite. Kind of an old & new affair. Also Sugar hill station has been added to, the north end is almost done now. Infact I'm changing the name of the station to "Castleford & Sugar Hill".

Also I have noticed that the "photo's" are coming out a tad grainy, I take the pics at the games resoultion of 1600x1200 & they look great until I have to downsize them to 800x600 for upload... Shame as the crispness is lost. :(

So first off........

ab13.jpg

ab14.jpg

ab15.jpg

The "new" old yard at the south of Sugar Hill yard. Mostly to be used for enginering trains (when there are some proper wagons available).

ab16.jpg

The Jocko leaves Sugar Hill marshalling yard with a rake of empty container flats on route to the Freightliner depot.
ab17.jpg

ab18.jpg

It meanders it's way across the Up & down fast & slow lines no doulbt causing chaos for regulating.
ab19.jpg

Before the entrance to the depot.
ab20.jpg

Still a bit of work on details in here.
ab21.jpg

ab22.jpg

An industrial estate has sprung up around the depot since it opened in the 60's.
ab23.jpg

Passing over the M?? motorway.
ab24.jpg

ab25.jpg

These shots show just how far into the country the depot was built.

ab26.jpg

A pair of foriegn loco's arrive light from SH TMD at the south of Castleford & Sugar Hill station......

ab27.jpg

.....& head for the standby loco siding.

ab28.jpg

ab30.jpg

This will allow the current standby loco to go light to SH TMD for fuel.

ab29.jpg

Meanwhile a Gronk/Jocko/ 08 idle's in the small P-way yard.

b01.jpg

A northbound HST awaits departure from platform 3.

b02.jpg

Upon the "RA" being given, the driver powers up & drowns out the bus station with pure valenta bliss. :D

b03.jpg

b04.jpg

B05.jpg

Past the expensive town houses, the local park & back into the countryside.

Havent finalised this part yet but I hope it's not bad for an afternoons work.

The idea of this bit is when you work a passenger train from the south the activity doesnt have to end as you reach the last station, why not work the train into the carriage sidings instead!

So..........

E08.jpg

E09.jpg

The new ECS sidings.

E10.jpg

E11.jpg

Anyone know where I based this on, I used to work there & now drive past it most days.

E12.jpg

E13.jpg

E14.jpg

A view of the running sheds.

E15.jpg

A HST power car awaits it's turn in the paintshop, ready for IC livery.

E16.jpg

A set of freshly painted NSE Mk2's emerge from an overhaul following painting.

E17.jpg

E18.jpg

Overview of the yard.

E19.jpg

The farm near the depot.

E20.jpg

E21.jpg

E22.jpg

E23.jpg

An MGR train passes the depot on the down slow.

E25.jpg

E26.jpg

E27.jpg

An IC service to Swansea passes the MGR.

E28.jpg

E29.jpg

E30.jpg

....& over the new bridge, I'm no Brunel but I liked building this bridge. Scenary still needed here.

Now a few random pics.

t08-1.jpg

An IC 08 at the sidings north of Castleford & Sugar Hill.

t9-2.jpg

Same again.

t22-1.jpg

A HST crosses a small river.

t41-1.jpg

A failed Deltic charter gets hauled into Castleford by a Jocko.

t64-1.jpg

Not to worry, proper engine now in charge. :D

how long do you spend creating these routes, in hours per day.

Maybe a few hours a day, depends on the shifts I'm working, sometimes more, sometimes none at all. Great thing about shifts really as I get some quality free time.

Just reading your sig, you aint half clocked some classes up there aint ya, how come such a varied driving life? think i read you started your railway career back in 89.

Duffs being a favourite of mine too, but what would a driver have to say about them? considering they are your favourite. it realy confuses me, that in todays world where there is hardly any good traction, that certain people strive to hate certain heritage traction i.e 47's

Well lets just say back in BR days the rules were often bent a little. Mostly it was when I was a shunter that I got my hand in(But also as a signalman & ops manager) , the good old hand drivers knew I was aiming to go for a drivers position & thought they would teach me the ropes. Being as we used to be sent to various places aound the area as a shunter meant I got to grips with a lot of different classes of loco over various routes. Trouble was the shunting job was being cut out & no available Trainman (D) jobs were coming up so I went to signalman instead as a stop gap, got stuck in the grade & then we got privatised so ended up the wrong side of the fence until recently.Of course that kind of stuff would never happen in the modern railway ;) ;)

Duffs being a favourite of mine too, but what would a driver have to say about them? considering they are your favourite. it realy confuses me, that in todays world where there is hardly any good traction, that certain people strive to hate certain heritage traction i.e 47's

I think it stems from the late 70's early 80's when there was so many spoons around as other traction was withdrawn, thus almost every train was 47 hauled. I really rate 47's, ok they are not the best loco at anything but do everything well. In other words they are just an excellent allrounder which is exactly why they have survived so long in service. They seem to be a bit of a "Marmite" loco amongst drivers, either loved or loathed. However when i've asked a driver who didnt like them they never give a good reason why they didn't like them except the fact that some could be drafty after they removed the headcode blinds.

Thanks for that, hopefully I will be able to release this route as phase 1 in the grand plan soon.

Rather than make umpteen miles of track & sacrifice detail, I have made this quite short to start with. Currently it's about 18 miles at the longest point, but 95% complete with scenery to at least a fair detail. Also I am trying to make it as realistic as possible, something that you can drive without having the track monitor switched on. I just want to make it more like the real thing within the retraints of what this sim can do, which is amazing already. Ideally approach controlled signals would just about finish it off, but nothing available like that yet.
Hopefully I will build more track miles to the route over time as a constantly growing affair.

Have had a go with this today, its excellent, although the 'Out and back' scenario 'Failed to load' and the household coal train derailed after about 10 mins driving on the morning session (seemed to dip down violently through the tracks, them come back up and derail)

The out & back scenario was never meant to be included when I uploaded the route, it uses loads of non standard rolling stock so will fail to load for that reason alone.
As for the household coal one....hmmm, I havent seen that happen before? How far did you get?

*********************************************************
Also work on Wales & Borders (BR) phase 2 is well underway.
Have so far extended the track about 15+ miles south of Little Hope & a start made on the scenery & signalling.

Here's a few WIP pictures.

w1.jpg

w7.jpg

About 8 miles south of Little hope is the area of Condover, long goods loops are available here on both sides. Plus a run round loop for the private sidings owned by Amey roadstone.

w12.jpg

A view of the Amey Roadstone sidings, there was a branchline here to a quarry. This has now been mothballed until further notice. Stone now arrives here from another quarry by lorry to be graded & taken away by rail & road. A BR 08 is leased of British Rail, but they may buy an industrial type shunter when one becomes available.

w13.jpg

w20.jpg

The disused platform at Condover, now a private residence. Only the downside platform survived.

w18.jpg

w14.jpg

w16.jpg

w17.jpg

The mothballed quarry branch. Think a chainsaw would be required before driving it!

w19.jpg

w2.jpg

A couple of pictures of Condover.

About another 5 miles from Condover is Shellick Jcn..

Looking south.

And finally, Hereton station.

wi5.jpg

wi6.jpg

wi2.jpg

Heading south from the station there are some old sidings serving industry's, now out of use (O.O.U) but the rail is still in plus the head shunt extends this far down.

wi4.jpg

Finally the small fuelling sidings south of the station.

Was there a train passing you at the time? I ask as on one of the testing runs I got derailed by the passing train just over the big river bridge. Havent managed to recreate it since though but there may be a out of formation piece of track around there. Oh & be warned with that sceanrio you need to brake well in advance as would be correct for such a loaded vacumn braked train.

These are just little samples of some of the line that will be included with the phase 2 version of My Wales & Borders (BR) route. This will hopefully be released on UKTS with the little errors fixed from phase 1.
All the trains are being driven by the Ai, with good regulation & signalling by the Ai signalman.

Or in Youtube grainer but maybe smoother version...
