My family travelled from Paddington to Cardiff for the 6 Nations Rugby this morning.
I've just checked the RTN trains and I cannot believe what I'm seeing.
From CDF to PAD
1718. 14 CAR
1819 15 CAR
GAME ENDS 1845
1903 5 CAR
1911 West Coast just appeared car ?
1919 10 CAR
1950 4 CAR
2022 LAST TRAIN 10 CAR

What on earth are they doing, trying to incite a riot?
This is unbelievable - there are thousands outside Cardiff Central station with no way home!
Anyone have any idea why this has happened and who is dealing with it?

Must admit seems a bit of an early finish, however you will be amazed how many rugby fans would never go back the same day anyway. A significant portion will be enjoying the city.

There was an incident between Reading and Didcot with stock displacement earlier in the day. There aren't any 14 or 15 coach trains, those are set swaps.

What on earth are they doing, trying to incite a riot?

Are there actually 'thousands' for London trains specifically, or are they actually travelling more locally?

There is an extra 9-car to Bristol Parkway scheduled for 1941 to clear crowds and other services to Bristol Temple Meads.

The 2100 offers a final connection at Bristol Temple Meads for London.

It looks like there has been some thought about this.

The 10 cars will fit a thousand in including standing but it wouldn't be pretty but isn't that unusual. I had to stand up the whole way back from a United game to London from Manchester on a stuffed Pendelino. We was speed limited as the tilt wouldn't work

Tiger shows the delayed 1903 and 1919 as 10 car

I see the 1903 and 1919 are in adjacent platforms, and the 1903 has been given the road as I type this.

The West Coast charter departed at 1942.

Edit: the 1950 was also a double set, so 8 cars, not 4.

There are a lot of pax going back to London - the trains were all fully booked this morning.

Yes, they'll either be 5s or a 9 and a 10 with an erroneous 5 somewhere in the mix that needs 'edited' out.

10 is the longest normal 80x formation.
Good, I'm relieved, and it sounds more logical too.

Wasn’t there an intention with the GWML electrification to Cardiff that 387s could be used for big events like this?

Sorry, I thought the reference was specifically to 80x formations.

387s can absolutely run as 12-car, yes.

Thanks for your help and logical explanations fellow forum members.
They're now on an 800 on their way back to PAD.

IME GWR are pretty good at tweaking timetables and allocations to deal with major events.

I think that tonight the problem has been greatly exacerbated by the disruption on the GWML core caused by a broken rail, causing delays and out of position trains and crews.

(I believe there is still a 5mph Emergency Speed Restriction (ESR) in force, which won't help service recovery.)

Yet another infrastructure failure between Reading and Paddington.

Whilst this was causing problems, I think far more disruption to the service was caused by Reading to Didcot being closed for nearly three hours due to an incident. If there were any passengers on the 1248 from Paddington for the Rugby, then I doubt that they would have arrived in Cardiff in time for the match.

Been told that earlier passenger disruptions at Cardiff, particularly on the rugex, have caused a further strain on the GWR network, causing platform closures, and some trains through there are delayed by up to an hour.

Looking at Tiger, Traksy and RTT at the moment all trains are delayed through Cardiff, with down trains queuing almost back to Newport.

Looks like an ECS in 4 and then the standard failure to run the 17:30 ex Manchester through Cardiff without incident. Neither have a green signal to allow them to head West.

5V84 has a green now as does part of 1V58 (though logic might have said leave that without splitting it)

Inciting a riot? Lord above, Railforums and Flyertalk sometimes out compete each other for the most melodramatic travel based postings.
