Applegates now have an Optare Versa, YJ13 HHX which was new to Weaverway of Newbury (source: bus lists on the web). It was being used on the 62 yesterday - when did the route pass back to Applegates from Gwent Vales? The route passes to Eurocoaches on 2 February.

It had passed me by too... but apparently it was in November https://www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/transport/bus-service-updates/changes-to-62-bus-service/

Changes to service 62 (Dursley to Thornbury)

Following discussions with the previous operator (Gwent Vale Travel), it was agreed that they would cease operation of contracted service 62 from Saturday 9th November 2024.
To ensure that the travelling public were not inconvenienced we have awarded an emergency contract to Applegates (Taylors Travel) to operate the service on the exisitng timetable for the next 3 months until the end of January 2025.
We will shortly go out to full tender for a contract for operating the service from February 2025 onward.

IIRC, this was a strange foray from them into local bus operation and coincided with a refreshed website that had echoes of a noted entrepreneur.

The Versa wasn't a recent arrival. It was with them in 2023 (reg: D7EFA) and replaced the ex Cardiff Omnicity that they had working the 62 after CT Plus went belly up.

I begin to forget who has operated this service now over the last 10 years. Was historically Badgerline/First 309 (?) before it became the 62 operated by Stagecoach, CT Plus, Applegates, Gwent Vales, Applegates and now Eurocoaches. I may well have forgotten someone there :D

Thanks for doing the detective work - I tried ‘googling’ it, but didn’t find that reference. Can’t think who you might mean by ‘echoes of a noted entrepreneur’!

The Optare has only recently returned to Taylor (Applegates). It had been with an operator in Henerfordshire but re-acquired asfter Gwent was required to surrender the route. Taylor had covered for odd days when Gwent could not cover the route.

It is, however, in full Applegates livery.

If you have a look on Flickr, it was working for Applegates with the cherished plate in Feb 2024. It was then snapped in Nov 2024 having regained it's original plate at Sargeants garage (near Hereford) in full Applegates livery.

Wonder if Sargeants had it on loan rather than purchased it?

Note: the cherished plate has been on a decker for a while

Yes it passed to Sargeant and was technically a loan as I understand it but it only actually came back to cover the route they toook over.

As reported above (posts 2252/3), from bustimes.org, The Big Lemon have recently acquired three Fiat Ducato/Mellor minibuses for use on WESTlocal routes 40, 61, 99, K1, P1 and Y8.
SC21 MKL from go-too (Ansa Services) of Middlewich and SJ21 NLK/N from First Leeds. The ex-Ansa one is a diesel and the ex-Leeds examples are electric versions.

Eurocoaches originally won the 61 St Anne's-Cannons Marsh tender but the big lemon took it temporarily as Eurocoaches had no buses to run it. Eurocoaches have got the 61 from 2nd February and WR71 YRN is going to run it.

This is very much not the story as i understand it. The service was originally procured by a local community organisation (not openly tendered), but there appears to have been a problem regarding the WestLocal funding which they had been allocated. As a result, service 61 has been tendered by WECA to start 02/02/25 and this is the tender which Eurocoaches have won.

I wonder if Mellor will be able to make the Orion E again, if it is still giving good service somewhere? Also, The Big Lemon certainty has an unusual fleet!

The service number in the windscreen.... Just like the good old days of Eurocoaches (c.2006) on tendered routes in East Bristol/South Glos
At least they’ve not been running round with Not In Service on the blind for weeks, like the Lemons on the K1 have been.

March 03 apparently. Not that the rise was publicise on buses or anything. Brings an end to it bizarrely undercutting the Stagecoach Day ticket.

Sad to hear that FT Williams Travel of Camborne suffered from a significant fire at their depot overnight (22nd March). Williams are one of Cornwall's largest family owned coach companies. Thankfully it appears that nobody was physically hurt in the fire, but clearly several vehicles, the depot building and lots of depot equipment has been severely damaged or destroyed.

Fire crews from across Cornwall battled the blaze through the night at an industrial unit in Dolcoath Road, Camborne used by Williams Travel.

Photos shared by Tolvaddon Community Fire Station show a number of vehicles totally destroyed by the fire, many reduced to shells.

The alarm was first raised at just before 1.50am this morning (Saturday), with crews from Tolvaddon, Perranporth, Falmouth and St Ives sent to the incident at the Dolcoath Industrial Estate.
The aerial ladder platform from Truro and the water carrier from Helston were also brought in, along with two flexi duty officers.

By 4.47am Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service reported that it was making good progress and the incident was being scaled back, with crews damping down and turning over.
Red Watch at Tolvaddon took over from the night crew this morning, returning to station around lunchtime.
However, the best efforts from all involved were not enough to save the vehicles being stored there.

The loss has devastated the local community, with people quick to offer their condolences.
Writing on the Tolvaddon Fire Station Facebook page, one person said: “Wow, there are no words. Williams, a local business that has been going for years, employing and serving many locals from engineers to drivers, to clerical, cleaners and more no doubt in-between.

“This is tragic for the local area. We should be thankful no one was hurt, and the fire crews returned to their base safely.

“I just hope the company can come back from this. To lose a long standing local business in this way would be so very sad.”

Another person said they could hear “what sounded like explosions” at the site last night, with many describing it as “devastating” and “so sad.”
Williams Travel has been operating coaches for more than 40 years and now offers coach holidays, day tours and private hire.

I am deeply suspicious because of the date (1st April) and recent new purchases have switched away from ADL but Faresaver enthusiast site is saying they have 2 x Enviro 400MMCs arriving this month

Fleet & Services Update

- Two brand new Enviro 400MMCs are rumoured to be joining the fleet this month

Faresavers own Facebook site also shows a picture of a fully liveried E400MMC in Scarborough with a 25 plate registration

Further to the above, it is not an April Fool, saw both buses parked up.at their depot earlier, regs not viewable.
