As it says on the side, it's the Network Rail New Measurement Train (effectively a modified HST); it measures track geometry and picks up track irregularities which are fed back and can then be acted on.

More efficient for covering a large area than traditional trackgangs on the ground.

No effectively about it, it is an HST through and through, simply one used for non-passenger operations.

I wouldn’t be so quick as to blame these factors as the cause of the delay to your train.

The Midland Pullman (Locomotive Service Group’s 1Z33) was two minutes early passing Tamworth. It wouldn’t have been allowed to be scheduled at this time if it was expected to delay another train.

The Test train (1Q23) was ten minutes early passing.

Which service were you waiting for?

Which service were

Different test train - the NMT was 1Q17, though I see no passenger trains in the same direction that were delayed around that time.

I can see three consecutive passenger trains in the opposite direction that were delayed around then, and the slightly late running Kingsbury - Lindsey empty oil tanks appears to have been in front of them.

Also colloquially called "The Flying Banana"!

OP's question already answered. But, from experience, P-way Section Managers aren't always complimentary when the train passes through their area.
