At fratton when there is something berthed on the reception road it will usually show as *10* or *12* depending. I think the feed fell over last night. I checked multiple areas that I had an idea of and it was as if it had frozen around 8pm.

Possibly how many coaches is parked up in the road? This might tell the signaler how many more units can fit in the sidings.

A common one often seen nowadays is WFFT in axle counter areas. Waiting for first train.

When Swindon panel closed there were several tributes.

When a fellow chargeman of mine moved on to location further south west the panel put SPT GOOD BYE in the describer !!!

Can someone enlighten me as to why this is necessary? Does the first train have to be cautioned or something?

I expect that it's all down to whether the axle counters are equipped with EPRs (engineers possession reminders) or not, if they are not then a disturbed axle counter(s) will require a sweeper train to restore them to normal use after a conditional reset has been carried out after a possession. Resetting an EPR will unconditionally reset & restore the axle counter section(s) thus no need to caution. Also in axle counter areas use a process called LCV (line clear verification) which includes VMF (vehicle management forms) which would of been used to count ever vehicle that had entered & leaves the possession from either end or the middle. The PICOP is responsible for the master copy and signallers for either end and ES for anything the enters like RRVs mid possession.

In my location we are not required to caution after a possession as long as the LCV has been completed, and all axle counters restored Correctly. Any that stay occupied are assumed to of faillled and necessary rules will be followed as required.

There are still a lot of variations in the equipment as every new resignalling project gets the latest version of axle counters and EPRs which will have various local special signalbox instructions covering them. Also first generation axle counters were not equipped with EPRs and required the signaller and the S&T to perform a duel conditional reset that would of require a sweeper train to restore the axle counter to signalling with its passage.

In my part of the word no one bothers with interposing nonsense in the TD, we use notes stuck to the panel with magnets instead if needed.

I tend to use these... -LB-, -T3-, BLOK, POSS, 1TEM, 3CAR, 4CAR, 8CAR, 12CR, NOGO. There are probably others I have forgotten.

Some people use -LB1 -LB2 etc when handling multiple line blockages; I prefer to interpose references to COSS' names. The best to date has to be LOVE.

While working the penultimate shift at my previous box: FARE WELL, 1959 2016, etc.

Trying to think of others that haven't been mentioned - SOOU, BRUK, TREE ...?

I seem to remember GOOD -BYE at Trent after it closed. Also seen PANT DOWN for EMUs stabled overnight. WL1521 RUST is probably an indication of TC issues, and a favourite hiding deep in my logs
