I agree, but that doesn't mean that it's a harmful activity.

No, but that wasn't my point. I think it makes them look like idiots, but so long as it's not done in a dangerous way (ie at highspeed on a mainline, where you could get hit by stuff) I don't really have an issue with it (except in some photos, where I think it can sometimes ruin a very good photo)

I think they should run most of the train as mk2s for most people, then have 2 or 3 mk1s up behind the loco(s) for the enthsiasts :)

Also, I think people flailing look like idiots, tbh.

Nothing wrong with a train full of Mk2s, What people don't seem to get is that aslong as it isn't Aircon stock, it's fine. Mk1 or 2.... Are great, aslong as it isn't air con...

I think we agree. Most flailing I ever saw was either leaving or arriving at stations, so not that dangerous really.

IMHO Mk IIa/b/c stock was about as good a second class coach as ever ran on Britain's railways. Always preferred them to Mk I TSOs.

They have openable windows :p

I meant the window you sit at. Vestibule windows are usually perma-hogged, so you dont get a look-in. And then there's the fun of standing up for a journey.

Much easier when you can simply open up a window at your seat.

It probably came from someone like, standing by the window, leaning out too far and getting stuck between being in the train and falling out - therefore flailing for help. Dunno really!!
