Hi all I just wondered what jobs All the trainee applicants were coming from. I'm coming from a manager/lgv driver background in the woodworking industry.

It might be more revealing to ask that question of the successful applicants? Driving I presume?

I was from an operational management background.

Trainee applicants from what position?

I'd imagine some of the positions in the industry have tighter constraints than others...

Left school worked in a slaughterhouse, then worked for a company that made explosive materials, now working as a self employed Gas Engineer.

One of my best buddies used to be a Gas Engineer and is now a qualified driver, went for Guard first but now been driving for 8 years I think

Prior to starting as a trainee 5 years ago I was a senior dept manager for a blue chip co, with a high profile career and loads of benefits, along with a massive salary and a very nice car.

Burn out and health crisis by 40 = re-evaluation, time for a change and some "me" career time. Which also =

1) 80% + pay cut while training
2) 50% + pay cut to qualified wages
3) 50% cut in my weekly hours worked
4) 90% + cut in work related stress
5) Unmeasurably large increase in happiness, job satisfaction, life balance, you name it

I'm a very lucky man. Hopefully, 15 or so years to go, of a job I (still) love rather than an early grave. Lots of people want this job for lots of reasons. So much competition!

Good luck to all who deserve it

I have worked for several years in IT. I never cease to be amazed as to the ingenious ways in which computers can inconvenience you.

Oh boy can I empathise with this!
Jumped ship from a similar career path, fortunately before I was 30. My prediction of the future, is sadly matched by your experiences.

Driving = having your life back. Simple as!

notadriver: It has very good prospects if you are suited to the job and are reasonably good at it (I hated it, hence the out). It will always pay better than average at worst, and once experienced, if you are good, and if you life deals you the right cards, you can do very well indeed - my brother in law is freelance, very good at his job, London based, and has landed on plum work with the likes of EMI, he has just bought a £1.5m house in his mid-30's - thats the top end of what you can achieve.

I've been out of the loop for a decade, the latest I hear is its hard to get in in the first place but once in, very secure and lots of opportunities, including overseas

Somehow I beg to differ. I joined a company as an applications programmer in a town to the south of Lincoln and I was barely getting paid anymore than the job I had left as a security guard although the hours were less.

In recent months I have been churning applications out for computer work like a production line and not one single response despite my experience. At least the First Group keep you informed of the result.

I have come to the conclusion that computing is a youngster's game. I removed my date of birth from my CV only to realise that I had left in the year in which I graduated.
