Abbellio are having problems with leaves and flat spots. A number of branch lines have not been run for a number of days.

Where is the lathe that they do to make them round again?

There's currently 5 AGA mk3 coaches at Bounds Green depot which I'm guessing are here to use the wheel lathe.

Ilford or in desperate times Bounds Green. Very occasionally Derby Etches Park or Hornsey are also used too.

Is there any YouTube footage of wheel lathe in action? I've looked and not found any in the past.

Perhaps bidders in the upcomimg East Anglia Franchise competition could earn bonus points by promising to instal a lathe at Crown Point?

The precise machine will vary, but the idea is the same. You can also 'turn' the wheelsets by removing the bogies from the vehicle and putting them onto a more traditional looking lathe, or indeed removing the wheelsets from the bogie and turning them on a very traditional looking lathe. If you can do the tyre turning without a bogie drop though, it's a big time saving with multiple units, a bit less so with LHCS.

What's causing AGA to have so many units out of service with large wheel flats/cavities?

I think the nature of the route has a lot to do with it. There are an awful lot of very remote areas on the network and lots of areas of known poor rail adhesion. The Harwich branch for example is renowned for being extremely slippery at this time of year. Also because the powers that be in the Govt don't want any trains sat around doing nothing there are very few spare units or slack in the fleet so you soon rack up the short forms and cancellations when wheel flats start.

How long does it take to reprofile/repair a single wheel?

You cannot do a single wheel, both wheels on any axle have to be identical diameter. But I believe using a modern wheel lathe whole 4 or 5 car units are done in only a few hours, they are usually in and out in the same day.

Etches Park move today; 10:05 ex Norwich. 156412 is off for a weekend away in the Midlands.

Indeed, another 360 failed yesterday with rather large wheel flats/cavities.

112 was the one on Wednesday. 107 going in this morning with bad flats too- things got very slippy on the Harwich branch last night.

Depends on how many cuts required but from positioning the vehicle to moving it along again is generally about 45 minutes. If you've got a tandem machine you can turn a bogie at once.

If damage is more severe, you may need to take 4 or 5 cuts so you'll be looking at over an hour.

That's providing there's enough metal on the tyre to remove otherwise it's a retyre issue

Does a change of tyre mean removing the wheel from the bogie first?

Certainly all current uk desiros have solid wheels. Once they are down to the minimum wear/lathe line on the wheelset (look for the groove in the other edge of the wheel) the whole thing needs changing. At least this way you can't shift a tyre. I'm guessing more and more modern stock is built like this too.

At least 3 AGA 156's at Derby Etches Park yesterday.

They even approached EMT to lend them some units

We have been. The outstationed 158s have found themselves on late Sheringhams (and even the last Lowestoft last week I think) in the last few weeks.

NRW - GYM / IPS - PBO services to be cancelled tomorrow and for the rest of the week. Rail replacement buses are to be utilised, due to a lack of serviceable units..

Not helped by AGA requesting a reduction in RHTT trips a couple of years ago as lineside clearances were supposed to have reduced the problem and they claimed the RHTTs were disrupting their services

a service apology from AGA

https://www.abelliogreateranglia.co...ents/1001-train-service-disruption-an-apology

"We apologise for the ongoing impact of train service cancellations affecting our local routes in Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire, and for the inconvenience this is continuing to cause our customers. The problems are due to some of our diesel trains suffering wheel damage, as a result of poor rail conditions. This situation leads to excessive wear on the wheels which must be repaired before the trains can re-enter service. On average we are continuing to see two trains arrive back at the end of each day with wheel damage, more than double the rate we have experienced in previous autumn periods. This means that trains are having to be taken out of service for repair at a more frequent rate than previously experienced.
We are doing everything possible to repair the trains affected as fast as we can (including sending trains to other locations with spare capacity for wheel repairs - to speed up the process of returning trains back into service - and seeking to hire additional trains temporarily, though other train operators are suffering similar problems, so we have not yet succeeded) and we are working with Network Rail to try and improve rail conditions to prevent further damage. We hope to be able to eliminate these cancellations and restore the normal service as quickly as possible, however where we continue to see poor rail conditions, necessitating the need to continually carry-out repairs to the trains incurring damage, the situation remains a challenging one. In the meantime, we are seeking to minimise the impact of the disruption by providing bus replacement and other alternative services wherever practical to cover for the cancelled train services"

To be fair when they are out and about the RHTT's are a nightmare and do cause delays. But in the wider scheme of things by not running them causes more delays and cancellations because the rails get contaminated. Catch 22. Remember that if someone's journey is delayed by it passengers want to know why the train was allowed to run during the day. But overnight they cannot cover the whole network.
