I meant that as a general experience I preferred being in an air conditioned Mk 2 than anything else. Loads of room, windows always lined up and you didn't get a whack from the MBSO powering the train.
Ah, the joy of commuting in South London in the 70s. Get up, shower, stroll to the station, and be plunged into the atmosphere of a school gym bag that hasn't been unpacked all term.

Dont forget that lovely warm feeling in your lower regions with steam heat stock, when you got up and discovered the seat was damp. Then there was the water features where the condensation was running of the inside of the windows.
And finally a walk through 4 MkI,s from the buffet on a 90mph express, on a good day you still had half a cup of coffee by the time you reached your seat, yes how I (dont) really miss daily travel in MkI's.
Yes I love them on a special for a bit nostalga but , dont view them through Rose tinted specs.
Anyone else on here travelled on the Reps before they gave way to the 442's. They were known as electric deltics for their power , but a fast run on the mainline to Bournmouth made you wonder if it was going to stay on the rails.

MK4 obviously...the others are all VERY good designs! But there is a reason why they made a MK2,3 and4...improvement.
Yes i remember i few hair raising trips in the southern MK1 EMU's and also in the mainline MK1's but the best i remember was them good old 304 EMU's that used to ply up and down the WCML they put the pacer's to shame .

I never travelled on the Mk1 and Mk2, but out of the other 2, I prefer the Mk3s.
I like the slam doors, the slide down windows and the overall character of the interior, being a 'proper' train. Old, loud loco, with a carriage with windows that work themselves down, so your ears pop when a train goes past, and actually having to open the door when you get home. Just feels 'right'.

Very. You describe things that I think most regular travelers would gladly see the back of.
However, I do prefer the mk3 to the mk4, on basis of "airspace". The Mk4 DOES feel that little bit more cramped thanks to the sloping sides- designed for a tilt capability never installed.

MK1 stands out from the rest. what can beat it? comfy soft seats not like the overstuffed ones in the modern coaches. You can stick your head out the window and enjoy the traction pulling you. Some have compartments. The lighting is just right.

MK3's are the best, smooth, comfertable. I have travelled on all but MK4, the MK1's are very nice with soft seat in some compartments! plus they are very antiquy now

MK4 are the last of the 'real' carriages to be made... I think they look the best aswell...
The Mk1s are fine, but tbh they are 1950s and waaay out of date now

They were never built, but they were the planned rolling stock for the IC250 sets which were going to be used on the WCML.

The following comments all relate to 2nd class/standard coaches.
As someone who is over 6 feet tall and who likes to "nap" on my journeys I have to place the later air con Mk2s with cloth covered seats and a decent head rest at the top.
Closely followed by the Mk3 at the time when the seat back cushions changed from two piece with headrests that kept dropping out to a single piece. Most importantly the seatbacks were low enough to see over and through the carriage.
I am not a fan of the recently modernised Mk3 or 4 in any version; FGW's are far too close together and bright, all the others with their very low set seats and high seatbacks are claustrophobic unless you are sitting round a table which i cannot do unless I cut my legs off at the knee!
