Five hour end to end journey? I reckon something with no buffet, cramped seats, poor seat to window spacing and preferably underfloor engines should do......better than johnny foreigner can do-oh hang on- bugger- they generally do loco hauled or IC standard-where did we go wrong?

The 1652 Liverpool departure today was a 2-car 158. At least 150 people were waiting for it at Lime Street, and it was running late! Chaos on the platform.

A 4-car 158 would still have been filled had the Liverpool-Manchester Apt semi-express service not been 10mins behind.

I don't know the loadings too well, but that sounds like a recipe for disaster...

Hopefully the counting system on the refurbished 158s will proove to the DFT that East Midlands Trains need longer / new trains on the Liverpool-Norwich route. Would be great if they did get new trains, this would mean that the refurbished 158s could be used on routes that 153s and 156s are used on. Then the 153s and 156s can go to Northern and Northern can get rid of some pacers! East Midlands Trains gains more passengers and makes more money. Win-win situation! Of course that will never happen in the next 10 years...

The seats in the 158s are actually pretty sturdy, although I gather you were having a quick pop at EMT, so I will pretend to ignore the comment ;)

In answer to the OP, it would boil down to the following:

185s

and for the busiest services:

A 2+5 HST, considering of Standard Class coaches only, including the buffet car.

Ever been in an SWT 158/159? I'd guess not. The seats are brilliant, lovely and comfy, nice and sturdy, far better than the current ones.

They are sturdy and well-padded, but if you're over 5'10", you'd better hope it's quiet and you get a table to yourself - the legroom is unbearable.

I hope the EMT 158 refurb does not go down the same route as the AXC 170 one. The seat pitch now is so small, I (at 6'1") cannot physically fit in a single airline seat.

I agree that the legroom in the 170s is rediculous (I'm 5'10"), though I did manage to get a nice sleep last time I went on a 159, even if it was just Dawlish - Exeter St Davids and there was a bitchy cockney woman and a drunk bloke getting on the whole train's nerves

If 185s were on the route, what's the point in an HST, when there are no power cars or Mark IIIs available? I think 2x185 would be a much better option.

As the OP says, it's about what members would choose in an ideal world.

I would have HSTs on the busiest runs, with 185s on everything else. In reality there is of course no HST stock available or anything else, but this is only for fun...

Maybe because that could imply to someone who doesn't know that Class 185's are 3 coaches that it is a Six coach multiple unit.

I'm Aware 185's are 3 Carriages as i use them regularly and cant wait for 185108 to lose its 08 vynils as it looks tacky... i just thought how about instead of planning for 2 years time when the units would be delivered how about planning for say 7 years time when the units are rammed full and yours truely is on them maybe everyone could enjoy a train ride in comfort on this route?.
