WMTrains livery and station branding

I have actually warmed to the Cadbury Fruit and Nut livery now. (Seems more whole nut to me though). I would have liked it to be a little less busy but it really is a uniquue design and colour scheme and I do like the purple alot. The front end looks nicer though as a matte finish. The orange would be nicer if a little deeper.

LNW wouldn’t be so bad if it was cleaned up too, as the metallic green on the front end looks amazing.

Still prefer the LM 170/172 liveries though. But I was never keen on the other ones with the lime green doors. Did the version with the lime geen doors come first?

The livery isn't Abellio's, it's the regional authority's.

From now on liveries will go with the franchise not the operator. I don't know if this applies to the GWR livery which FGW adopted a year or so back but it certainly applies to the WMR livery which was announced in January last year before the franchise was let.

Apples and oranges with VTEC and local authorities. VTEC passes through more combined authorities than WMR, so if anything, the national authority will probably have a say on livery if the "virgin operated on a not-for-profit" option is discarded in the favour of renationalisation.

But all of that is by the wayside in terms of livery design.

Apologies if this is slightly off topic, but I've often thought that liveries being decided on by the operator is a bad idea.

As much as some people love the 'excitement' of trains being repainted in a new livery, repainting and rebranding trains/staff uniforms/stations every few years is a serious waste of money in my opinion. That's money that could go into much more meaningful upgrades, keeping ticket offices open longer, perhaps even lowering fares.

The mish-mash of fonts, colours, signage is also unhelpful, messages/communications should be uniform to aid familiarity, increase recognition time and ultimately ensure the message is recognised, understood, and found quickly, that's the most basic tenet of communications, which is why we have a single, standardised set of colours/fonts/styles on our Road Network, on TfL, and did have with British Rail.

There being different fonts/colours/signage norms at Birmingham New Street, from Tamworth, and from Burton-on-Trent (all stations operated by different franchises) ultimately results in ineffective communications for rail passengers.

It'd be much more sensical, and would waste far less money, if all station signage was done in common Network Rail style, that didn't change each time a franchise changed hands, and likewise if train liveries were dictated by the DfT, Scottish/Welsh government, or Local Authorities, and then with simple small features painted/stuck on to identify the operator which would then be easily removed and changed when the franchise changed hands.

The stations north east from Birmingham really are a weird case as Water Orton and Coleshill Parkway and possibly other stations are West Midlands Trains stations yet none of their trains call there. As I have not been on that route for a few months I don't know if they will have WMR or LNW signage. Tamworth is a similar position but at least LNW trains do call there although I suspect the signage will be WMR

Trains need repainting for anti-corrosion purposes at roughly the frequency of franchise changes anyway. So the cost is pretty negligible - it's near enough just the cost of livery design.

Pretty sure the Trent Valley stations will be LNW ones, even the ones where the majority of services (ish) are WMR ones (i.e. Lichfield and Rugeley TV).

I did read in issue 194 of Today's Railways UK that Northern, despite plans to replace them by the turn of the decade, were looking at new routes for 323s; these were I believe:

• Golborne Jct - Preston
• Preston - Lancaster
• Manchester & Ordsall Lane Jct Branch
• Deal Street & Edge Hill Line
• Manchester Victoria - Bolton
• Bolton - Euxton Jct
• Preston - Blackpool North
• Edge Hill Jct - Liverpool Lime Street.

The Manchester-Preston-Blackpool corridor is expected to be mainly 323-operated once complete (whenever that is); I'm assuming the 323s will be directly replaced by the 331/0s (31 3-car Civity EMUs) as they come on stream.
This may seem like a deviation from the WMTrains livery thread, and it is, but only to say that, so far, Northern wants rid of the 323s.

The WMT fleet isn't due to leave until 2020, when the new Aventras enter service on the Cross City et al.
So at this point, who can say where they'll end up??
