I am taking the following journey on Tuesday 3rd July:-
York (dep 9.10am) to Leeds (arr 10.22am) (via Harrogate line)
Leeds (dep 10.53am) to Blackburn (arr 12.14pm)
Blackburn (dep 1.03pm) to Manchester Victoria (arr 1.52pm)

I have individual ticket prices of:-
£11.80
£14.80
£8.80
Total £35.40
(no railcards)

I was wondering if anyone with local knowledge can tell me if there is a way to reduce this cost?

Thank you very much.

Will you be making more journeys that day, or in the days immediately before/after that? If you are, and can provide the details, some sort of Rover ticket from Northern might be the best choice.

York - Blackburn SDR (Anytime Day Return) Rte: via Burnley £21.10

Change of route excess on return portion only to Rte: Any Permitted. This is priced at HALF the difference between the appropriate fare (£31.50 SVR off Peak Return) and the fare paid (£21.10), and is therefore £5.20.

You can finish short at Manchester.

York station should be able to do the excess no problem at all (they are very good with excesses) as should Blackburn (but I have no idea if they are good with excesses or not!) but if not, the price is the same on board the train on the return journey.

Total = £26.30

Edit: It can be done for not much more than that, without excesses, by getting a SDR York - Entwistle via Burnley (£21.10) and an Entwistle - Manchester CDS (£5.90). This may be more convenient (e.g. if buying online using RSH vouchers) and only costs 70p more.

Thanks for the info.

No return journey, those are my only journies that day.

--------------

Can I ask a few other questions?
There is a 3/4 hour waiting time in Blackburn. Can I leave the station to go into town?
If I want to finish my journey at Salford Crescent, is that a problem?
I presume it’s easy enough to buy these tickets online ahead of time (from Southeastern’s website for example)?

If only a single one way journey then I would suggest a York - Manchester Stns Anytime Day Single priced at £24.70.

This ticket has no restrictions, and you are fine to break your journey as many times as you wish as long as you are on a permitted route.

Travelling via Harrogate, Blackburn & Bolton is permitted.

To define a permitted route we have to look at the routeing guide.

So we look at the permitted routes from York - Manchester Group.

The following are ALWAYS Permitted routes:

Any direct trains advertised from YORK to MANCHESTER PIC in the current timetable

The shortest route with a regular train service, not including walks and transfers is 67.72, the route is shown below.

  • YORK
  • Leeds Group
  • Huddersfield Group
  • STALYBRIDGE
  • GUIDE BRIDGE
  • Manchester Group

The following are Permitted unless there is an easement preventing them:

Any route 70.72 miles or less (i.e. within 3 miles of the shortest route above).

Mapped routes from YORK to MANCHESTER Group

TP
LY
TP+MH

Any additional route allowed by an easement.

For the journey you wish to take the maps TP + MH would be applicable.

Map TP : York - Harrogate - Leeds - Bradford - Blackburn
MAP MH : Blackburn - Bolton - Manchester Victoria

Hope this helps.

What's wrong with an Anytime Day Single (SDS) from York to Manchester Stations at £24.70? You're on a Permitted Route all the way using maps TP and MH?

Yes you can although you have suggested only a 45 minute wait in your original post.

If I want to finish my journey at Salford Crescent, is that a problem?

No, you can finish your journey there if you wish.

I presume it’s easy enough to buy these tickets online ahead of time (from Southeastern’s website for example)?

Yes that's fine. You would just need to purchase a York to Salford Crescent Anytime Day Single priced at £24.70.

And any from York to Manchester Victoria (there are a couple eastbound at least).
