1 – A pregnant woman along with her three year old daughter were thrown out of the running train and died on the spot. Her only crime was she did not have money to buy a ticket and refused to bribe GRP (Government Railway Police) as asked by the GRP men.

Was her offense so great that she had to thrown out of the running train and die?. This happened on last thursday at Lakhim Pur near Lucknow.

2 – In a shocking incident, a 35-year-old woman died after being allegedly thrown out of 2003 Delhi-bound Shatabdi Express by the catering and ticket-checking on Sunday. The incident took place near Panki-Bhaupur railway station after an argument as the woman was traveling without ticket. No one in the compartment came to her rescue.

The woman, whose identity is yet to be ascertained, had boarded the train at the Kanpur Central Railway Station. A youth named Raju of Raidalpur, who was a witness to the incident, said that he saw the woman falling from the footboard of the train at the pole no: 1056/4 near Bhaupur railway station around 5:21 pm. She was being assaulted by two-three persons at the gates of the C-I coach of the train, Raju said.

"She was fighting with two-three men near the footboard of the compartment. One of them slapped and pushed her out of the speeding train," he added.

3 – 24 year old Benudhar Bhoi was thrown out of the running Howrah – Puri Passenger train between Jakhpura & Jajpur Road Train station on May 13, 2009 by TTE (Indian Railway Ticket Examiner). His crime was he could not afford to buy a ticket and it cost him his leg.

4 – On September 30, 2008, a 20-year-old vegetable vendor Rajiv Singh had died after he was allegedly pushed off a running train by GRP personnel in Saranda passenger train. He was coming to Rourkela. Prior to that 12-year-old boy Shankar's right leg and right hand got severed after a TTE allegedly threw him out of the Geetanjali Express near Rourkela.

5 – Unidentified men threw a couple out of a moving train near Jhinjhak railway station in Kanpur Dehat on Friday morning (June 5, 2009). Woman, Ram Kali (50), died on the spot, her husband Kedar Singh (55) was undergoing treatment at the LLR Hospital.

7 – June, 2008 – A man and his teenaged niece were thrown out of Fatehpur passenger train after the man tried to stop a group of hooligans, allegedly in an inebriated state, from molesting her near Kanpur on Thursday.

8 – 19 June 2009, Balangir, Orissa. The girl, who is yet to be identified, was reportedly thrown out of Rayagada-bound Tapaswini Express. She was traced by the Railway police and brought to Balangir headquarters hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. Sources said the girl boarded the train at Sambalpur and was thrown out of the train at about 8 am in between Loisingha and Balangir. Eye-witnesses said the girl was sleeping and suddenly found herself on the track.

Recurrence of such incidents has panicked the passengers and put the railway police in a spot of bother.

Police suspect the acts are handiwork of an organised gang. On condition of anonymity a senior official said members of a gang use to travel from Rayagada to Bargarh everyday. They steal valuables from the passengers and on seeing a passenger observing them, they push him out of the train.

This is the fourth such incident in this route. Last year, a labourer lost a leg when somebody pushed him out of the train in Balangir. A man of Kalahandi district too was found dead in the route last year. A week back, a young labourer Ajad Kumar Paswan of Bihar was found on the track at Laderbahal near Loisingha railway station in an unconscious state after being pushed out of a running train.

9 – Varanasi, May 26 2008. Dilip Prajapati had refused to pay Rs 30 for a seat, an extortion that has become the norm in general compartments.

A teenager lost his left leg after a porter threw him out of the Varanasi-Surat Tapti Ganga Express at the Varanasi railway station on Sunday evening. Reason: Dilip Kumar Prajapati (13), who was carrying a ticket, had refused to pay Rs 30 to the porter for a seat in the general compartment.

This has become a norm for indian railway authority (railway police & ticket collector) to demand bribe and throw people out of the running train, even if they have a valid ticket. The government and authority has done nothing to prevent precious lives of innocent people.

No one must die just because they can't buy a ticket for their train journey.

In spite of making huge profits for last 5 years, Indian Railway has failed to improve security of the passengers. This is not a single incident, this has been going on for a long time. The authority has simple turned a blind eye to save people from throwing out of the running train.

These stories are shocking and show a culture very different from ours with some endemic problems. It is totally outrageous that these acts are being carried out by employees and police officers.
The thread title chosen is a little disconcerting though. Are you suggesting that a legal, properly enforced system of dealing with fare dodging somehow falls under the same generalisation as these assaults and murders? Our penalty fares are designed to discourage persistent fare evasion and give legal and financial recompense for the TOCs who operate it.

Penalty fares aren't used for people who refuse to pay a fare. They are used to penalise passengers for things like long queues etc in certain areas.

If someone is refusing to pay then an MG11 should be issued not a penalty fare.

So the question should be "You thought the UK MG11 system was bad?" as that is the direct comparison.

If we started throwing people off moving trains for not having a ticket and giving a range of false names and addresses, I think it would have a series of positive effects;

1) Less loud music being played from mobile phones to annoy other passengers
2) First class would no longer be chav class on evenings and weekends
3) Less likelihood of vandalism
4) Less overcrowding
5) Less crime off the railway network

I can't see a downside, except perhaps the cost of recovering the bodies - although surely they could be ground up into the ballast? The birds would eat the rest.

We could spray paint the offenders before, so drivers that may hit any survivors walking wounded wouldn't need to slow down or feel guilty.

Sounds like a good idea really, bit like an electric fence, if you don't touch it you don't get zapped. If you buy a ticket and don't muck around on the train you don't get thrown out.

jonmorris0844 - although the things you listed are annoying, I think your proposal is more than a little extreme!

Okay, I agree - spray painting the offenders was perhaps going too far. I always do that! Sorry!
