SailRail changes during strike - Windermere to Holyhead, 8/5/2004

Would I be right in thinking that the chance of actually being able to get a seat reservation on e.g. the TPE train, now, without paying for a new ticket, is low? These are not travellers who will want to stand, or have the possibility of standing, from Oxenholme to Manchester. But it says...

SailRail changes during strike - Windermere to Holyhead, 8/5/2004

I have asked. In the meantime, I suspect she is either booking a ryanair flight or cancelling the trip entirely because quote "the cost of buying those tickets via Manchester is much more than I paid for the SailRail ticket". If anyone could explain, on the assumption that the ticket held is a...

SailRail changes during strike - Windermere to Holyhead, 8/5/2004

Having looked at brfares.com, I see basically "SAILRAIL STNDBY" and "SAILRAIL ADVNCE", with variants for the different ferry companies. The boat departure is 1410 which I believe is Irish Ferries, so my guess is they have this one...

SailRail changes during strike - Windermere to Holyhead, 8/5/2004

Dear Experts, A friend has booked (via TrainLine) a SailRail to Dublin, starting in Windermere. The planned itinerary was Windermere -> Oxenholme -> Warrington -> Holyhead. Avanti drivers are now striking on this date so I'm assuming that the Oxenholme to Warrington leg won't run. (Of course...

    ASLEF strikes W/c 6th May

A friend is supposed to be travelling from Windermere to Holyhead on a SailRail ticket on Wednesday 8th, when Avanti will be striking. Would anyone like to predict what level of "emergency timetable" they will offer from Oxenholme to Warrington? What have they done in the past? She does have the...

Cross Country cutting out Winchester and Basingstoke stops

Winchester was often suggested as the easiest place to change if travelling beyond Bournemouth (e.g. Poole, now that Cross Country doesn’t go that far). If I’ve read the posts above correctly, this still works due to the sense of the set-down/pick-up rule - is that right?

Night train from Paris to Barcelona

Yes, I also walked from Puicerda to Latpur-de-Carol, for some reason that I now forget. I recall a very pleasant friendly restaurant, which I think was on that route though I could be mistaken. (I’ve just had a look for it on Google Earth but can’t find anything. This was nearly 20 years ago!)

    TV programme about Mallaig line

Last night I watched a lovely programme on iPlayer about the Fort William - Mallaig line. Totally recommended to everyone. In iPlayer, search for “Ceol na Loidhne”. Yes it’s in Gaelic with subtitles, but don’t let that put you off. You might even learn a few words!

Auto Transformer Modelling using LT Spice.

Correct, in an autotransformer the inductances are in series. But that’s not the same as just putting two inductors in series; in an autotransformer the two coils share the magnetic field. Your model must express that. (I find that schematic a bit confusing because the way they have put the...

    This is a scam, right?

No, they’ve moved on to the next phase now. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/En****tification “Here is how platforms die: first, they are good to their users; then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers; finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back...

    Are paper tickets non recyclable?

Apparently some thermal receipt paper is now recyclable, and the proportion is likely to increase as the problematic chemicals in the older papers are being banned in various jurisdictions. I‘ve no idea how this applies to UK rail tickers. See e.g...

Predictions for SWR and ECML tomorrow 27/12/2023

I believe the Delay Repay was processed automatically; it was much quicker. I don't see any evidence that that process checked the actual delays to the bus or anything else. Indeed I imagine that whatever record of train delays that they have likely doesn't include delays to RRBs, since they...
